He recalled pushing himself and colleagues to work long hours in Microsoft’s early years, then said that age—and especially becoming a father—helped him recognize that there is more to life than work. The phrase “life has been filled with deep regret” came from a later headline, not from Gates’s speech.
What Gates said he regretted
Gates presented this as the fifth of five pieces of advice he wished he had heard at his own graduation. Looking back on his early years at Microsoft, he said he did not believe in vacations or weekends. He encouraged people around him to work long hours and paid attention to who was leaving early or staying late.
His perspective changed as he grew older and became a father. As he put it in the speech, “There is more to life than work.” His reflection was a personal lesson about how he had approached work and time—not a claim that every demanding career leads to regret.
His advice to graduates
Gates urged graduates to make room for relationships and for life outside their jobs. He advised them to nurture friendships, celebrate successes, recover from losses, and take breaks when needed. He also urged them to be considerate when other people need a break. His short formulation was: “Take a break when you need to.”

These were recommendations in a commencement address, not findings from a workplace study. The speech offered personal perspective and counsel rather than statistics or evidence that quantify the effects of long hours.
Why the headline needs context
Futurism’s May 21, 2023 article used the headline “Bill Gates Says His Life Has Been Filled With Deep Regret.” That wording is the publication’s framing; it is not a quotation from the speech. Gates’s remarks focused on one specific lesson: he wished he had learned earlier to value time and relationships beyond work.
The speech’s broader message was not limited to that reflection. Gates also told graduates that life is not a one-act play and careers can change; that smart people should acknowledge what they do not understand and learn from others; that they should seek work on important problems; and that friendship matters personally and professionally.
