When Bill Withers died—and when the news was announced
Withers died on March 30, 2020, in Los Angeles, at 81. The Recording Academy reported that date on April 3, citing his family’s statement. The Songwriters Hall of Fame biography says he “passed away on April 3, 2020”; that is the date associated with the public announcement, not the death date given in the family-statement account.

In the family’s words, Withers was “A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other.” (Recording Academy, April 3, 2020; Songwriters Hall of Fame)
A concise career with an unusually durable songbook
Born in Slab Fork, West Virginia, in 1938, Withers began professional recording in 1970 and retired from music in the mid-1980s. The Recording Academy describes his recorded output as an eight-album discography. That span produced songs that moved between intimate reflection and communal reassurance without relying on elaborate language: “Grandma’s Hands,” “Use Me,” “Just The Two Of Us,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean On Me” and “Lovely Day.” (Recording Academy)

“Ain’t No Sunshine” and the breakthrough
Withers’s 1971 debut album, Just As I Am, included “Ain’t No Sunshine.” In its 2020 account, the Recording Academy reported that the single peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s compact form and repeated expression of absence make its ache feel immediate rather than ornate. (Recording Academy, 2020)
“Lean On Me” and a song built for many voices
Withers’s second album, 1972’s Still Bill, featured “Lean On Me.” The Recording Academy’s 2020 account says the album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and that “Lean On Me” became Withers’s only single to top the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s direct invitation to offer and accept support has made it especially adaptable to group singing and reinterpretation.

- Shrink-wrapped
That afterlife includes Club Nouveau’s 1987 version, which also topped the Billboard Hot 100, according to the Recording Academy. The distinction matters: Withers’s original and a later interpretation each reached the top of the chart, while the Academy identifies the original as his only chart-topping single. (Recording Academy, 2020)
More than two signature songs
“Lovely Day” turns a repeated phrase into a declaration of optimism; “Use Me” gives a more conflicted relationship a candid, rhythmic voice. “Grandma’s Hands” draws on memory and family, while “Just The Two Of Us,” recorded with Grover Washington Jr., became another widely recognized entry in Withers’s catalog. Together, these songs show the range inside his unshowy approach: tenderness, desire, memory and resilience stated in language that feels spoken rather than performed at a distance.

Why his songwriting feels so direct
Withers’s songs often start with a clear human situation—a person missing someone, asking for help, remembering a relative, or admitting attraction—and let the melody and repeated words do the work. He did not need to obscure the feeling behind complex imagery. The plainness is not a lack of craft: concise lines, carefully shaped grooves and choruses that invite a listener in give the songs both intimacy and reach.
That quality helps explain why his work can feel personal and collective at once. “Ain’t No Sunshine” stays close to one person’s loneliness; “Lean On Me” makes support a shared promise. Withers’s songwriting moves between those scales without losing its conversational voice.

Two Hall of Fame inductions
Withers was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2015, he entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a Performer, with Stevie Wonder inducting him. The two honors recognize distinct aspects of his work: his writing and his place as a recording artist. (Songwriters Hall of Fame; Rock & Roll Hall of Fame)
“Still Bill” and life beyond recording
The 2009 documentary Still Bill follows Withers’s early roots, breakthrough career and post-retirement family life, according to the Recording Academy. It offers a route into the person and career behind the songs, while the albums themselves remain the clearest record of his concise, distinctive songwriting. (Recording Academy)
