This 13-song selection pairs familiar signatures with tracks that show how the group’s sound changed. “Barry Gibb tracks” is the framing of the original title, not a claim that Barry sings lead on every song; the list is about the Bee Gees as a group. “Essential” is a considered starting point, not an objective ranking. The official Best of Bee Gees and Barry Gibb-curated Timeless: The All-Time Greatest Hits collections offer useful reference points, though neither establishes a definitive top 13.
13 essential Bee Gees songs
The sequence moves broadly across the group’s career rather than ranking songs from best to worst. It draws on the official collections’ mix of early favorites, ballads, disco-era recordings and later work. For context, the official Best of Bee Gees LP has 12 tracks, while Timeless presents a 21-track chronological selection chosen by Barry Gibb.

1. “Spicks and Specks”
A concise early-period starting point, this song opens the official Timeless sequence. Its place there makes it a useful reminder that the group’s story began well before its disco-era fame.
2. “New York Mining Disaster 1941”
This early song brings a more dramatic, story-shaped mood to the selection. It appears near the beginning of Timeless, alongside the group’s other early work.

3. “To Love Somebody”
A central Bee Gees ballad, “To Love Somebody” is also one of the songs singled out in the official store’s description of the 12-track Best of Bee Gees LP. Its inclusion makes the list’s range clear: these essentials are not all dance records.
4. “Massachusetts”
The official store also highlights “Massachusetts” among the Best of Bee Gees selections. It belongs to the group’s earlier pop repertoire and provides a contrast with the later, more rhythm-forward tracks here.
5. “Words”
Another song named in the official Best of Bee Gees description, “Words” shows the group’s enduring place in the ballad tradition. It sits in the early-to-mid portion of the broader career-spanning Timeless sequence.

- Released in 2017 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of their peak Saturday Night Fever era, Timeless: The All-Time Greatest Hits brings together 21 of their most popular singles, including "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," "Tragedy," "Too Much Heaven," and "You Win Again
6. “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You”
The official store calls this one of the popular songs on Best of Bee Gees. It also appears on Timeless, where it is sequenced among the group’s early recordings.

With its distinctive, reflective character, “I Started a Joke” is one of the six songs the official store specifically names when describing Best of Bee Gees. It adds a more inward-looking moment to the early part of this selection.
8. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”
This ballad appears on Barry Gibb’s Timeless selection. Its presence reinforces how central the group’s slower, emotionally direct songs are to a career-spanning listening guide.

9. “Jive Talkin’”
“Jive Talkin’” marks a clear shift toward the more rhythm-led sound associated with the Bee Gees’ later-1970s period. It appears in the second half of Timeless, after the earlier pop and ballad selections.
10. “Nights on Broadway”
Another entry in the later-1970s stretch of Timeless, this song sits between “Jive Talkin’” and “Fanny (Be Tender with My Love).” Its placement illustrates the varied styles represented in the group’s transition into its best-known dance-era work.

One of the group’s most recognizable late-1970s songs, “Stayin’ Alive” is included in Timeless alongside “Night Fever” and “More Than a Woman.” It is an essential for the group’s public identity, but it is only one part of the larger catalog.

12. “Night Fever”
“Night Fever” belongs to the same late-1970s run on Timeless as “Stayin’ Alive.” Including both makes sense in a starter list because they represent the Bee Gees’ dance-floor era without making that era the whole story.
13. “You Win Again”
The final track on Timeless is “You Win Again,” a later entry that carries the selection beyond the group’s late-1970s peak. Ending here gives the list a genuinely cross-career shape rather than stopping at disco.

Start with the first seven songs to hear the early-pop and ballad side, then move into “Jive Talkin’,” “Nights on Broadway,” “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever” for the later-1970s shift. “You Win Again” provides a later-period endpoint. These groupings are listening cues, not a ranking or a claim that each track has the same sound.

Best Value
The official Best of Bee Gees LP offers a compact 12-track reference, and the official Timeless CD has 21 tracks in chronological order. Barry Gibb says he chose the Timeless songs with that sequence in mind, describing them as songs he felt he, Maurice and Robin would be proud of. That is his account of his own selection, not a universal critical verdict. Check the official store for current stock and edition details.
Why there is no definitive top 13
The official collections are useful guides, not proof of a settled ranking. The store describes Best of Bee Gees as a collection of popular songs and calls out six of its tracks; Timeless broadens the frame to 21 recordings from across the career. Neither source declares an authoritative top 13. This list therefore balances recognition, era, style and vocal character rather than claiming that one order is final.
The selection also avoids assigning lead vocals or songwriting credits song by song. Those details should be checked against individual track credits; the collection pages support inclusion and sequencing, not a complete track-by-track authorship or vocal-role audit.
