Make the character feel like it is speaking
Buying a puppet is only part of the choice. In its demonstration guidance, Folkmanis recommends eye contact, natural mouth movement timed to speech, relaxed hand movement, and a consistent character voice. It advises opening the mouth on words or syllables rather than moving it continuously: “Instead, the mouth should open only when releasing a word or syllable, then close again.” Practice with a short exchange before the party so coordinating speech and movement feels manageable.
