Bret Hart’s clearest reported answer to “Who is the best wrestler today?” was CM Punk. In an interview reported by CBS Sports on August 6, 2025, Hart also said he was a fan of Rey Mysterio and liked Roman Reigns—but he did not give a complete ordered list or publish scores for today’s WWE roster. So the most accurate Hart-based ranking puts Punk first as his stated pick, while treating Mysterio and Reigns as other wrestlers he praised, not as second and third.
Hart’s clearest pick: CM Punk
When asked about the best wrestler today, Hart answered CM Punk, according to CBS Sports’ report of the interview published August 6, 2025. Hart also mentioned Rey Mysterio as a favorite and said he liked Roman Reigns. The reported comments establish Punk as Hart’s most direct choice; they do not establish a full ranking among those three, or among all WWE wrestlers.
Because those comments are from 2025, they are a dated statement, not confirmation of Hart’s view in 2026. They also do not, by themselves, establish which wrestlers are on WWE’s roster today. A changing WWE superstar page is not a stable, dated roster snapshot, and championship status alone would not prove who is the “best.”
What Hart’s reported ranking system measures
Around 2020, ComicBook.com reported a three-part system Hart used to assess wrestlers, with each category scored from 1 to 10:
#1 Best Overall
- New
- Mint Condition
- Dispatch same day for order received before 12 noon
- Guaranteed packaging
- No quibbles returns
- Look: a wrestler’s appearance and presentation.
- Promos: ability to speak and connect with an audience.
- Wrestling ability: performance in the ring.
The report described Hart scoring himself in those categories. The original recording or transcript was not available in the cited coverage, and the report does not provide verified scores for current wrestlers. Nor does it establish category weights or a formula for combining scores. It would therefore be misleading to assign Punk, Mysterio, Reigns, or the wider roster numerical marks and label them Hart’s ratings.
How Hart’s wrestling philosophy adds context
Hart’s official WWE profile describes a methodical style focused on exploiting an opponent’s weaknesses, moving efficiently, and using pinning combinations. That offers context for what he valued in ring work, but it is not evidence that he used those points as additional formal scoring categories.
In a WWE interview published November 12, 2012, Hart said, “It wasn’t about having 24-inch arms — it wasn’t so much about being real-life cartoon characters as it was about being great wrestlers.” He also recalled, “It wasn’t just talk: We backed it up with great matches and I think that’s what I remember about The Attitude Era.” These remarks emphasize wrestling and compelling matches alongside presentation and talking; they should not be mistaken for a revised rating formula.
Hart’s official biography says he took pride in having “never actually hurt even one opponent!” That statement reflects his emphasis on protecting opponents, rather than a separate category in the reported three-part system.

What can—and cannot—be ranked from the available comments
- First by explicit answer: CM Punk, the wrestler Hart named when asked who was best.
- Also praised, with no order stated: Rey Mysterio and Roman Reigns.
- Not established: a complete current WWE ranking, individual scores for these wrestlers, or a weighted total under Hart’s three reported categories.
WWE’s announcement that Hart and Steve Austin would receive the inaugural WWE Immortal Moment recognition for their WrestleMania 13 submission match speaks to Hart’s legacy, not his assessment of today’s roster. The evidence supports reporting his dated preference and explaining the reported rubric; a longer numerical ranking would require fresh, attributable judgments or clearly labeled independent scoring.
