Avengers: Secret Wars is an announced Marvel Studios film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with Robert Downey Jr. announced as Doctor Doom. Its plot and Kang’s role have not been established by the sources cited here. The title also points to two very different Marvel comic events—one from 1984–85 and another from 2015—which offer useful context but do not confirm what the film will adapt.
What is confirmed about the film?
At Marvel Studios’ 2024 San Diego Comic-Con presentation, Marvel announced Anthony and Joe Russo as directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. D23’s report of the announcement records those details. Joe Russo said, “If we’re gonna bring Victor Von Doom to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we’re going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character.”

That announcement is not a synopsis. The available sources do not establish the film’s plot, complete cast, whether it will adapt Battleworld, or whether it will reset the MCU. The Doom casting also does not, by itself, confirm that Doom replaces Kang as the film’s villain.
Is Doctor Doom replacing Kang?
There is no confirmed answer in the sources cited here. Downey Jr.’s announced role is Doctor Doom, but those sources neither confirm Kang’s participation nor announce that he has been removed or replaced. It is therefore accurate to say Doom has been announced for the film; claims about Kang’s status or the film’s villain should be treated as unconfirmed unless Marvel announces them.

What do the two Secret Wars comics mean?
Secret Wars is the name of two major Marvel comic events. Both feature Doom and Battleworld, but their premises and scale differ. The comics are background for understanding the title, not proof of the movie’s story.
| Comic event | Premise | Publication scope |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars (1984–85) | The Beyonder brings heroes and villains to Battleworld and offers the winning side its desires. Doom becomes pivotal and takes on the Beyonder’s power. | Marvel lists 12 issues. |
| Secret Wars (2015) | Multiversal incursions—collisions that destroy universes—lead to a patchwork Battleworld ruled by Doom, with surviving heroes resisting him. | Marvel describes the main series as nine issues. |
Marvel’s guide to the 1984 event and series listing provide the earlier story’s context and issue count. Its guide to the 2015 event describes the later multiverse-scale story. The 2015 series is not simply a line-by-line continuation of the original: it uses a different central crisis and a much larger multiversal frame.

What is the reported release date?
D23’s 2024 announcement report gave Avengers: Secret Wars a May 2027 date at that time. On May 23, 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported that Disney had moved the film to December 17, 2027. That is the latest date established by the sources cited here; it is a secondary report, not a current official schedule confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you read before Secret Wars?
You do not need to read either comic event to understand the announced film: Marvel has not confirmed that it will adapt either storyline. For comic context, choose according to what you want to explore:
Rank #3
- For the original Battleworld contest: read the 1984–85 Secret Wars, a 12-issue heroes-and-villains crossover centered on the Beyonder.
- For the multiverse-scale Doom story: read Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars (2015), a nine-issue main series. Its lead-in runs through Hickman’s Avengers and New Avengers.
Marvel lists the Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus, which collects Avengers (2012) #35–44, New Avengers (2013) #24–33, Secret Wars (2015) #1–9, and related material. It is one physical option for reading the 2015 story with its lead-in; it is not required preparation for the film. The collection listing does not establish current retailer availability.
