Two days before Tomorrowland Belgium 2025 was due to open, a fire destroyed its Orbyz Mainstage. The festival opened on July 18 after a rapid rebuild, and stage parts reportedly supplied by Metallica helped make the replacement setup possible. Organizers and workers led the recovery; the word “saved” is headline shorthand, not a claim that Metallica acted alone.
What happened at Tomorrowland Belgium
Tomorrowland Belgium was scheduled for July 18–20 and July 25–27, 2025, at De Schorre in Boom. On Wednesday, July 16, a fire engulfed the main stage, just two days before the first weekend. The Associated Press reported that no one was injured and that organizers had not announced a cause in their initial statement (AP, July 16, 2025).

Tomorrowland later said its original Orbyz Mainstage was destroyed. The scale of the loss put the opening in doubt, but the organizers decided the festival would go ahead. A Tomorrowland spokesperson, Debby Wilmsen, told DJ Mag, “We’re going to keep going, we’re going 100 percent!” She also said, “We can also throw a party without a main stage” (DJ Mag, July 17, 2025).
How the festival reopened in less than 48 hours
Tomorrowland’s July 29 retrospective says its team built a new structure on the original Mainstage site in less than 48 hours. That is the organizer’s account of the reconstruction. The Associated Press independently reported from the July 18 opening that DJs Odymel and Pegassi performed beside charred frames after a short delay (Tomorrowland, July 29, 2025; AP, July 18, 2025).

Wilmsen described the effort as a shared response, telling AP: “It is all about unity, and I think with a good vibe and a positive energy that our festival-goers give to each other and the music we offer, I think they will still have a good time.” The account of the rebuild credits Tomorrowland’s teams; it does not mean the original stage was restored. The festival proceeded with a replacement setup.
What Metallica contributed
MusicRadar reported on July 22 that organizers asked to borrow Metallica’s stage, which was being stored in Austria, and that stage parts were airlifted to Belgium in time for Friday. The specific loan, storage and airlift details come from MusicRadar’s reporting; Tomorrowland’s retrospective does not describe those logistics (MusicRadar, July 22, 2025).
Martin Garrix, whose set was still scheduled, acknowledged the parts in a post: “I cannot believe I’m actually typing this… but my set at Tomorrowland is still happening!” He added, “Massive love and a big shoutout to the incredible Tomorrowland team for pulling off miracles – and to Metallica for coming through with the new stage parts.” His comments underscore the distinction: Metallica reportedly provided components, while the festival’s own teams carried out the recovery.
What is known about the fire’s cause and safety
The cause was not established in the contemporary reports cited here. AP said it was being investigated, and DJ Mag reported on July 17 that it remained unknown and under investigation. No final finding is provided by these accounts, so the fire’s cause should not be stated as fact. AP reported that no one was injured.

How the rest of the 2025 edition unfolded
Tomorrowland’s July 29 retrospective describes the completed edition, not just the opening weekend. The organizer reported 400,000 attendees from more than 200 countries, over 205 million livestream viewers across platforms, more than 850 artists across 16 stages, 15,000 crew members and 49,000 Global Journey travelers. These are Tomorrowland’s own figures for 2025, rather than independently audited totals.
