Bill Gates acknowledged that he had affairs during his marriage, while saying they were unrelated to his interactions with Jeffrey Epstein. A later-released House Oversight Committee transcript adds detail: Gates discussed at least three affairs. He also said Epstein appeared to be considering ways to pressure him, but that he was not successfully blackmailed.

What affairs did Gates acknowledge?

In prepared remarks published June 10, 2026, Gates acknowledged infidelity and said: “These affairs had nothing to do with my interactions with Epstein, but they were painful for my family.” Read Gates’s prepared statement.

The fuller account emerged in the House Oversight Committee transcript. Gates discussed at least three affairs. This differs from ABC News’s June 10 report, which described two; its June 23 report, after the transcript became available, reported at least three. The chronology matters: the early report preceded the more detailed public transcript, so the accounts reflect different stages of reporting rather than a single fixed number. ABC News, June 10; ABC News, June 23.

What did Gates say about blackmail?

Gates said he was not successfully blackmailed. In the transcript, he described Epstein’s language as veiled and said there was no explicit threat along the lines of “if you don’t do something, I will reveal this.” He characterized the released emails as making it look as though Epstein’s brainstorming was moving in that direction: “I was not blackmailed, but, you know, as you look at these emails, you know, it looks like Mr. Epstein’s brainstorming was going in that direction.” House Oversight Committee transcript.

That is Gates’s account of what the emails suggested about Epstein’s intent, not a judicial finding. His distinction is that he saw signs of possible pressure tactics but said there was no direct threat and no successful blackmail.

How did Gates describe his contact with Epstein?

Gates said he first met Epstein in 2011 through professional and philanthropic contacts. He described meetings in 2011 and 2012 as limited, with later discussions centered on possible structures for global-health giving. He said the proposal went nowhere and that he stopped meeting or communicating with Epstein in December 2014. Gates said he never witnessed or had an indication of ongoing criminal conduct, never visited Epstein’s island, ranch, or Florida home, and regretted meeting him. These are Gates’s statements, not independently established findings. In his prepared remarks, he said: “I should never have met with Epstein in the first place.” Gates’s statement.

What is known about the Gates Foundation’s contacts?

The foundation’s own February 2026 statement and the later external review address institutional activity from different perspectives. The foundation said it did not pursue collaboration with Epstein, create a fund, make payments to him, or employ him. In July 2026, the Associated Press reported on a WilmerHale external review commissioned by the foundation: it found roughly 30 meetings involving Gates and foundation staff between 2011 and 2014, as well as employee concern about reputational risk. The review found no evidence that the foundation paid Epstein or did anything illegal. Foundation statement, February 2026; Associated Press, July 21, 2026.

The meeting count and staff concerns add context to the institutional relationship, but they do not establish that the foundation collaborated with Epstein or that every individual interaction had the same purpose. The review’s findings about the foundation should also be kept separate from Gates’s personal account of Epstein’s alleged intent.
