A seasonal cruise is another possibility, but its sailing time and ticket availability are not confirmed in the city’s holiday guide. The NYRR Midnight Run begins just before midnight on December 31 and continues after midnight, so it is an overnight event rather than a daytime January 1 outing. What is happening in New York City on January 1, 2027?
The City of New York lists January 1, 2027, as New Year’s Day and a federal, state, and city holiday. City offices, government buildings, post offices, and schools are closed. That listing does not establish whether private attractions and businesses will open, so check directly with each place you plan to visit. City of New York: New Year’s Day
NYC Tourism + Conventions’ 2026–27 holiday-season guide identifies the Polar Plunge on January 1 and lists seasonal cruises through that date. It also includes the NYRR Midnight Run, which spans December 31 and January 1. NYC Tourism + Conventions’ 2026 holiday-season guide

Participants are encouraged to donate in place of an entry fee. The event involves plunging into the Atlantic, which the guide describes as icy, but it does not give a water temperature.

Check the organizer’s latest event details before traveling, especially if you plan to participate. For an outdoor outing, check the weather and dress for winter conditions.
Know what the NYRR Midnight Run involves
The Midnight Run is tied to New Year’s Eve: the guide places its countdown at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, followed by a four-mile run after midnight. It is therefore an overnight option for runners, not a daytime January 1 activity. Confirm registration and requirements with the organizer, and consider how staying up late and running may affect the rest of your holiday.
Ask the cruise operator about January 1 sailings
NYC Tourism + Conventions lists seasonal holiday cruises through January 1, but that broad listing does not confirm a particular sailing, departure time, or available ticket. Contact the operator directly before making a cruise the centerpiece of your day. Check where it departs and whether the experience suits your preference for indoor or outdoor time.

The city holiday listing covers government closures, not the operating schedules of private businesses. The cited official listings do not provide a complete January 1, 2027 schedule for museums, observation decks, restaurants, or other attractions. A venue may have its own holiday hours; confirm those with the venue before booking, traveling, or arranging a tightly timed itinerary.

For a flexible day, choose an attraction only after you have verified it is open, then check its admission arrangements and how long it takes to get there. If you cannot confirm an indoor plan, keep your itinerary adaptable rather than assuming normal hours.
