The ventures do not all represent the same kind of ownership. Some sources describe him as a founder, co-founder, chairman or co-owner; other relationships changed through transactions, and public venture lists do not establish what he owns today.
Roc Nation became an organizing hub for entertainment
Team Roc, a division of Roc Nation, identifies Shawn Carter as a co-founder and chairman of Roc Nation, which was co-founded in 2008. It describes the company’s work as including live productions and strategic partnerships. That places the company at the center of several strands of his business activity, rather than treating each project as an isolated extension of his music career. Team Roc’s biography is a useful overview, but it is not a current corporate organization chart or a statement of ownership percentages.

His work in the industry also included a leadership role at a major label: Team Roc says Carter served as president of Def Jam Recordings from 2004 to 2007. Sotheby’s 2021 biographical material describes him as the founder of Roc Nation Sports and notes film and television projects including TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story and Free Meek. These examples show the range of entertainment activity documented in the sources; they do not establish the current structure or status of every project. Sotheby’s biography and exhibition material
His consumer brands span a longer business history
Team Roc’s venture list includes Roc-A-Fella, Rocawear, Baseline Studios and Paper Planes, alongside D’USSÉ and Marcy Venture Partners, which the page calls MarcyPen Capital Partners. The list is evidence of a broad business history, not proof that Carter retains an ownership stake in every named venture. It does not provide transaction dates or current percentages for most entries.

That distinction matters particularly for spirits. Team Roc lists D’USSÉ among Carter’s brands. Forbes search-result material reports that he sold half of Armand de Brignac to LVMH in 2021 and sold a majority of his D’USSÉ stake to Bacardi in 2023. Those claims should be understood as Forbes-reported transactions; the underlying profile was not accessible, so the public evidence cited here does not establish the terms beyond those reported descriptions or the size of any remaining stake. Hospitality and live events added places to gather
Team Roc identifies Carter as a co-owner of the 40/40 Club and lists Made in America among his ventures and brands. Sotheby’s also describes his association with Made in America. These sources support including hospitality and live events in the picture of his business activity, but do not establish current venue operations, festival dates or locations. TIDAL shows how a venture can change through a partnership
TIDAL is a clear example of a high-profile business relationship changing over time. In a March 4, 2021 announcement, Square said it planned to pay $297 million in cash and stock for a significant majority stake in the music and entertainment platform. Square said existing artist shareholders would retain the remainder. The $297 million was announced transaction consideration, not a figure for Carter’s personal proceeds. At announcement time, Carter was expected to join Square’s board, subject to the deal closing; that release alone does not establish his present board status or ownership share. Square’s March 2021 announcement
Square also reported that TIDAL’s catalog included more than 70 million songs and 250,000 high-quality videos at the time. Those are 2021 company-reported catalog figures, not current counts. Carter described the platform’s intention this way: “I said from the beginning that TIDAL was about more than just streaming music, and six years later, it has remained a platform that supports artists at every point in their careers.” That is his characterization of TIDAL’s purpose, not independent evidence of financial performance or artist compensation. Square’s release
Marcy Venture Partners brought an investor’s lens
Marcy Venture Partners represents a move from building or partnering around individual entertainment and consumer businesses toward investing across companies. TechCrunch reported on October 25, 2021, that the firm had closed its second fund with $325 million in capital commitments and was managing $600 million in assets at that time. It described the firm’s focus as consumer, culture and positive impact, and named investments in areas including fashion, skincare, food and wellness. These are historical figures and examples reported in 2021, not a current fund report or a measure of Carter’s personal wealth. TechCrunch’s October 2021 report

Taken together, the documented ventures show a portfolio built through multiple roles: founder, co-founder, chairman, co-owner and investor. The pattern is not simple accumulation of permanent ownership. TIDAL’s announced majority-stake transaction and the reported spirits deals illustrate how partnerships and stakes can change; historical venture lists, meanwhile, are not a reliable substitute for current ownership disclosures.

The available sources do not provide a comprehensive current cap table or comparable valuations across these businesses. They therefore cannot support a ranking of Jay-Z’s ventures by present value or profitability. For documentary viewers, the more useful takeaway is the breadth of the activity—and the need to distinguish a documented association from a verified current holding.
