Bigpoint announced a browser-based Game of Thrones MMORPG with HBO in March 2012, later naming it Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms. The announcement described a game in pre-production and targeted an initial closed beta for fall 2012; the contemporary sources available do not confirm that the beta or a public launch occurred.

What Bigpoint announced in 2012

Bigpoint’s March 1, 2012 announcement, reproduced by Animation World Network, said the company would present a first look at the project’s pre-production at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, March 7–9. Bigpoint described it as an exclusive partnership with HBO: a browser-based game set in Westeros and inspired by the television series, itself adapted from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.

The planned game was meant to bring the show’s power struggles into play. Bigpoint said players would have to master combat and politics to preserve their dynasty. It named Norwegian studio Artplant as its development partner and Unity as the platform, and set fall 2012 as the target for an initial closed beta. Those details describe the plan announced at the time, not proof that the game reached beta or release.

Why the name Seven Kingdoms matters

In a July 2012 announcement reproduced by Westeros.org, Bigpoint gave the project its official name: Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms. The release called it free-to-play and placed its story after the deaths of King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. Its proposed activities included forming alliances, political maneuvering, player-versus-player combat, and sieges.

That naming announcement adds more detail to the 2012 concept, but it does not establish that the announced features were completed or available to players.

Did the Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms MMO launch?

The cited contemporary announcements document the project, its planned features, and its intended closed-beta timing. They do not say whether the beta took place, whether the game launched, or when development ended. On the evidence available, its outcome is unconfirmed; it would be inaccurate to present the fall 2012 beta target as a completed event.

Do not confuse it with Winter is Coming

Bigpoint’s current catalog lists Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming, a distinct named offering. Bigpoint describes it as a PC strategy game based on the HBO drama, licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment under HBO and developed by YOOZOO Games. Its official game portal promotes castle development, alliances, battles, characters, and locations in Westeros.
