Her work is represented in catalog listings by titles such as “Mirza Sahiban,” “Sohni Mahiwal,” “Baba Kala Maror” and “Chhalla”; a personal essay by Aarnav Tewari-Sharma also recalls a performer who could sing, act, joke and tell stories onstage. The essay’s description of her as a definitive bearer of Punjabi folk tradition is the author’s personal judgment, not an established consensus.
Who was Biba Jagmohan Kaur?
Jagmohan Kaur was a Punjabi singer and performer whose work drew on folk storytelling as well as devotional and literary material. Aarnav Tewari-Sharma’s 2023 essay in Scroll.in presents her not only as a vocalist but as an entertainer: someone who could act, joke, flirt and animate a story for an audience. That portrait is grounded in the essayist’s cultural reflections and memory, rather than a formal biography.
The essay says Kaur began singing in the late 1960s and made her first HMV record with K. Deep in 1971. It places her recording of Bulleh Shah’s “Kamli” in 1972 and says she had recorded an album of Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s poetry by 1976. Tewari-Sharma also describes performances across rural and urban Punjab, Britain and Canada, as well as appearances at Doordarshan Punjabi studios in Jalandhar and BBC studios in New Delhi. These career details are reported by the essay.
What does the ‘Jutt’ framing mean?
The title’s “Jutt” framing is best read through the songs and stage persona discussed in Tewari-Sharma’s essay, not as a claim about all Punjabi people or a single, uniform Punjabi identity. The essay treats Kaur’s performances as part of a living tradition of storytelling, humor and social observation. It also links her repertoire to older literary and folk material, including Heer and the poetry of Bulleh Shah.

In “Baba ve Kala Maror,” which the essay also refers to as “Baba Kala Maror,” Tewari-Sharma hears rambunctious humor and innuendo. The line “Main late daftaron hoyi” evokes, in the author’s reading, a woman arriving late for work. That glimpse of a woman’s everyday life gives the song a social edge alongside its comedy. The essayist is careful not to turn that reading into a claim about Kaur’s stated politics: “I do not know if she was an avowed feminist, but she was a strong woman, in awe of strong women, singing of women seeking their independence.”
Where to begin listening
Saregama’s Punjabi Carvaan song list provides examples of titles associated with Kaur, including many credited jointly with K. Deep. It is a useful guide to recorded repertoire, not a complete discography. The groupings below are listening routes based on the titles and descriptions available; they are not formal genre classifications for every recording.

Folk narratives and ballads
Try “Mirza Sahiban,” “Sohni Mahiwal,” “Jatti Heer” and “Sahiba Ho Gayi Mirze Di.” Their titles point toward well-known Punjabi narrative traditions. The story belongs to the inherited material; Kaur’s contribution is in how she voices and performs it. Saregama’s catalog also lists “Puran Bhagat,” another title associated with a narrative tradition.
Humor and social observation
“Baba Kala Maror” is a natural starting point for the playful, teasing side of Kaur’s stage image described in the Scroll.in essay. The essay’s discussion of “Main late daftaron hoyi” suggests how a comic situation can also register women’s work and independence without making the song a straightforward manifesto.

Poetry and devotional material
The essay identifies “Kamli” with the kalam of Bulleh Shah, making it a way to hear Kaur interpreting an established poetic tradition rather than presenting the song as her own composition. For a catalogued devotional example, Apple Music lists Gujri Da Chann under Jagmohan Kaur, Narinder Biba and K. Deep. The entry is dated December 2, 1998, and identifies T-Series as the label and ℗ 1998 Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited. That is the date and credit information shown on the listing; it does not establish when the recordings were made or when the album was first issued.

Kaur’s significance emerges from the combination of repertoire and performance. Catalog evidence shows songs attached to Punjabi folk narratives alongside comic and devotional titles, while Tewari-Sharma’s essay emphasizes the force of her delivery and her ability to make songs feel like acted stories. K. Deep appears as a frequent collaborator in both the essay and Saregama listings.

Tewari-Sharma calls Kaur the “last, true purveyor of the Punjabi folk traditions,” but explicitly frames the essay as a personal love for the artist. It is a powerful statement of the author’s regard, not proof that there is a settled consensus about who represents Punjabi folk tradition. The available catalog listings likewise offer examples, not a measure of her audience, influence or the full scale of her recorded work.
