Their roles make the strip’s ensemble easy to navigate: Rat schemes, Pig is a good-hearted foil, Goat supplies reason, and Zebra takes on activism. Andrews McMeel identifies them as the central cast, but its published descriptions do not rank them by popularity.
Who are the main Pearls Before Swine characters?
Andrews McMeel names Rat, Pig, Goat, and Zebra as the strip’s central characters. The publisher’s descriptions are concise role summaries, not a complete character encyclopedia, so the distinctions below are best read as a guide to how each character functions in the ensemble.

Rat: the egotistical schemer
Rat is the self-important plotter. Andrews McMeel calls him “the egotistical schemer” and describes him elsewhere as arrogant and self-centered. His plans and confidence make him a frequent source of conflict with the other characters. Andrews McMeel’s King of the Comics page gives the short version of that role.
Pig: the good-hearted foil
Pig is described as both “the slow-witted foil” and “the slow but good-hearted conscience of the strip.” That combination matters: he may be naive, but the publisher’s framing makes his kindness part of the character, not a joke at his expense alone. He often provides a contrast to Rat’s schemes. Andrews McMeel’s Pearls Freaks the #*%# Out page includes the conscience description.

Goat: the often-ignored voice of reason
Goat is the ensemble’s grounded counterweight. The publisher calls him “the oft-ignored brain” and describes him as “the voice of reason that often goes unheard.” His role sets clear judgment against Rat’s plotting and the confusion that can surround Pig.
Zebra: the activist
Zebra is identified as a “card-carrying activist.” The publisher connects his activism to the danger the Crocs pose to his relatives. That gives Zebra a recurring point of conflict with the Crocs, rather than making him simply another observer of Rat and Pig’s antics.

How the four roles fit together
This is a role-based comparison, not a popularity ranking. Rat’s schemes meet Goat’s reason; Pig’s good nature makes him a foil; and Zebra brings activism and a direct conflict with the Crocs into the group’s dynamic.
| Character | Publisher-described role | Useful contrast or connection |
|---|---|---|
| Rat | Egotistical schemer | His plotting contrasts with Goat’s reason. |
| Pig | Slow-witted foil; good-hearted conscience | His naive, kind nature contrasts with Rat’s self-centeredness. |
| Goat | Oft-ignored brain; voice of reason | He offers a grounded counterweight to the others. |
| Zebra | Card-carrying activist | His activism puts him in conflict with the Crocs. |
Who else appears in the ensemble?
The central four are not the whole cast. Publisher descriptions also name Guard Duck, Snuffles the cat, Gomer the sarcastic goldfish, and the Crocs. These characters widen the comic’s ensemble without displacing Rat, Pig, Goat, and Zebra as its central group. The publisher’s Larry in Wonderland page spotlights Larry the Croc and includes alternate or story-specific versions of Snuffles, Pig, and Zebra.

Is there an official popularity ranking?
No popularity ranking is established by the publisher descriptions cited here. They identify the central cast and summarize character roles, but do not report reader polls, appearance counts, or comparative sales. Calling one of the four the most popular would therefore go beyond the available evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can you read more of the cast?
Collected editions offer a way to see the characters in context. Andrews McMeel’s King of the Comics description features the core cast alongside supporting characters. The publisher describes Pearls Gets Plastered as collecting strips from 2022–2024 and featuring Rat, Pig, Zebra, Goat, and the rest of the gang; that description does not establish it as the newest available edition. The publisher’s page for Sgt. Piggy’s Lonely Hearts Club Comic also identifies the four as the central characters.
