For a classic-era starter list, begin with January 3, 1987; October 3, 1987; May 27, 1989; July 28, 1990; and November 8, 1992. The five episodes offer distinct hooks, from a steel-cage rivalry match to a pair of championship bouts. This is a curated watchlist based on the matches WWE’s episode archive lists—not an official or definitive ranking.
Which Saturday Night’s Main Event episodes should you watch?
WWE’s historical results archive gives dated summaries of the original series, making it possible to choose episodes by their advertised matchups and variety. These five picks cover different years, championship stories, stipulations, and card combinations.
January 3, 1987: Hogan vs. Orndorff in a steel cage
Hulk Hogan faces Paul Orndorff in a steel-cage rematch, a straightforward choice if you want a rivalry-centered main event with a clear stipulation. The same episode also lists Adrian Adonis vs. Roddy Piper. WWE’s episode archive identifies both matches.
October 3, 1987: Savage challenges Honky Tonk Man
Randy Savage challenges Honky Tonk Man for the Intercontinental Championship, giving this episode a different focus from the Hogan-centered cage matches. Hogan vs. Sika is also on the card, according to WWE’s archive.

May 27, 1989: Hogan vs. Big Boss Man in a steel cage
This episode pairs a WWE Championship cage match between Hulk Hogan and Big Boss Man with Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard challenging for the World Tag Team Championship. It is a useful pick if you want a headline stipulation alongside tag-title stakes. WWE’s dated summary lists both bouts.
July 28, 1990: Two title matches
Ultimate Warrior defends the WWE Championship against Rick Rude, while Demolition face the Rockers for the World Tag Team Championship. The two championship matches make this a strong later-period selection. WWE’s episode listing identifies the matchups.

November 8, 1992: Michaels vs. British Bulldog
Shawn Michaels challenges the British Bulldog for the Intercontinental Championship. The card also includes Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage challenging Money, Inc. for the tag titles, offering both a singles title match and a major tag-team contest. See WWE’s archive entry.

What makes these picks a useful starter watchlist?
The choices are spread across the archive’s 1985–1992 window and offer different reasons to tune in: cage-match stakes, Intercontinental Championship stories, multiple title bouts, tag wrestling, and a battle royal. WWE’s archive provides the episode dates and match descriptions; those descriptions establish what was advertised on each card, not an independent judgment about match quality. The archive does not present an official ranking of the best episodes.

How the original episodes differ from the revival
The original series premiered in 1985 and aired on NBC through 1991; WWE’s historical archive continues through 1992, including the later Fox-era episodes. The current WWE show archive includes recent Saturday Night’s Main Event editions as well as Sunday Night’s Main Event, so check the date when choosing between classic episodes and the revival.
In an August 20, 2025 announcement, NBC Sports said the renewed specials would stream live exclusively on Peacock in the United States four times each year under a multi-year agreement. That is the arrangement described in that announcement, not a guarantee of present availability in every territory. Historical episode access can vary by location and catalog; check your local WWE distribution service. Peacock’s show catalog page does not establish that every classic episode is available everywhere.
