It dramatizes her effort to swim from Cuba to Florida with her friend and coach Bonnie Stoll. Nyad did make a Cuba-to-Florida crossing in 2013, but the question of whether it met a formal standard for ratification remains disputed: the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) reported on the crossing in 2022, then its advisory board denied ratification in 2023. Nyad maintains that she completed it under her understanding of the rules.
What is Nyad about?
Netflix describes Nyad as the story of Nyad’s long-held ambition to swim about 110 miles from Cuba to Florida. In the film, she returns to the goal at age 60 and works with Stoll as she attempts to become the first person to complete the route without a shark cage. Annette Bening plays Nyad and Jodie Foster plays Stoll; Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin directed the film. Netflix credits the screenplay as adapted from Nyad’s memoir Find a Way. Netflix’s official film description identifies it as a feature adaptation, not a documentary.
The film’s emotional and dramatic presentation should be distinguished from the record of the swim and the later debate over its classification.
Did Diana Nyad really swim from Cuba to Florida?
WOWSA’s 2022 report records a crossing from Marina Hemingway in Havana to Smathers Beach in Key West. It gives the start as August 31, 2013, and the finish as September 2, 2013. The report records a distance of 110.86 statute miles (178.41 km) and a duration of 52 hours, 54 minutes, 18.6 seconds. These are figures reported by WOWSA, not an independently certified or ratified record. WOWSA’s 2022 report explicitly says the crossing was never ratified.

Was the swim officially verified or ratified?
No formal ratification was granted by WOWSA. In September 2023, its advisory board denied ratification after reviewing the documentation. The decision is not the same as saying no crossing took place: it concerns whether the swim could be accepted under applicable standards and the evidence available to the board.

- It said there were no established ratification rules in place before Nyad’s attempt.
- It said post-swim materials suggested that the swim followed procedures from the Florida Straits Open Water Swimming Association (FSOWSA), which the board said did not formally exist at the time.
- It reported conflicting statements from crew members and gaps of more than nine hours in observer logs.

Why do accounts of the swim disagree?
The disagreement involves both the evidence and the criteria used to classify an open-water swim. A report that describes a shore-to-shore timeline does not, by itself, establish that a governing body has ratified the swim under a particular set of rules.

Nyad’s account
Nyad says the crossing was shore-to-shore and unaided under her understanding of the relevant rules. She notes that the swim did not use English Channel rules and says there was no exit from the water, flotation aid, or forward-propulsion aid. Her account quotes the conclusion of WOWSA’s 2022 report that there was no known evidence that she exited the water or gained forward momentum from a support vessel. That statement reflects the report’s finding; it did not lead to ratification, which the board later denied. Nyad’s account is available on her website.
Other swimming organizations and observers
TIME reported in November 2023 that the Marathon Swimmers Federation considered the event an assisted swim because Nyad used protective gear and safety support. TIME also described the swimming community as divided over how to classify it. “Assisted” and “unassisted” depend on the rules being applied, including how those rules treat protective equipment and safety support; the label should therefore be attributed to the organization or source using it rather than presented as a universal verdict. What is fact and what is dramatization?
The film draws on Nyad’s life and memoir, and its central premise—the attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida with Stoll’s support—corresponds to the 2013 crossing described in WOWSA’s report. But Nyad is a narrative feature, so its scenes and storytelling are a dramatization rather than documentary evidence.
