El País reported that she was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012, later said she had recovered after a long course of treatment, and described renewed symptoms in a June 2026 Instagram story. Those are reported public statements—not a medical record or proof of what is causing her symptoms.
Here is what has been reported about Hadid, how Lyme disease is diagnosed, and what health authorities say about symptoms that persist or return after treatment.
What happened to Bella Hadid?
In a June 26, 2026 report, El País said Hadid was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012. The newspaper reported that in 2023 she said she had recovered after “10 years and 100 days” of treatment. It also reported that she shared an Instagram story in June 2026 describing a return of symptoms and the distress of feeling uncertain again.
El País quoted her story in Spanish: “Crees que has encontrado el protocolo correcto, el tratamiento adecuado, la rutina ideal, y de repente reaparece un brote y, de golpe, nada parece seguro otra vez”. The details—including the treatment duration—are attributed to her reported statements, not independently verified clinical facts. The report does not establish her present diagnosis, treatment, or the medical cause of the symptoms she described. El País, June 26, 2026

What is Lyme disease?
In the United States, Lyme disease is caused mainly by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and rarely by Borrelia mayonii. Infected blacklegged ticks spread the bacteria to people. Common symptoms can include fever, headache, fatigue, and erythema migrans, a characteristic expanding rash. If untreated, infection can affect the joints, heart, and nervous system. Does Bella Hadid still have Lyme disease?
The available reporting does not answer that question. Hadid’s description of renewed symptoms is not enough to determine whether she has an active infection, symptoms following treatment, or another condition. It would be inappropriate to diagnose her from a social media post or to treat her reported history as a model for another person’s care.

Can Lyme symptoms persist or return after treatment?
Yes. The CDC says some people experience fatigue, body aches, or difficulty thinking after recommended Lyme treatment. The reason for prolonged symptoms is not known, and similar symptoms can have other causes, so the agency advises evaluation with a healthcare provider.
The CDC summarizes studies finding that prolonged symptoms were 5–10% more common six months after treatment among people who had Lyme disease than among people who did not. That is a comparison from studies, not a prediction for any individual. The CDC says extended antibiotic treatment has generally not been more effective than placebo for curing prolonged symptoms and has been associated with serious complications. What does a Lyme test show?
Diagnosis depends on symptoms, the likelihood of tick exposure, consideration of other possible illnesses, and laboratory results when testing is indicated. The CDC recommends FDA-cleared antibody tests that use a two-step process. Tests may be falsely negative in the first few weeks of infection. Later, antibodies can remain detectable for months or years after bacteria are no longer present, so a positive antibody result by itself does not prove an active infection. How are prolonged symptoms described?
The CDC recommends “Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome” (PTLDS) for prolonged symptoms attributed to Lyme disease. It says the cause is currently unknown and discourages the term “Chronic Lyme Disease” when used to imply that prolonged symptoms are caused by an ongoing bacterial infection. As the CDC puts it, “CDC discourages use of the term Chronic Lyme Disease because it implies that prolonged symptoms are caused by an ongoing bacterial infection when, in fact, the cause is not currently known.” CDC: Chronic Symptoms and Lyme Disease

What treatment guidance does the CDC give?
Most Lyme disease cases can be treated with 10 days to four weeks of antibiotics, but the appropriate medicine and duration depend on factors such as symptoms, age, allergies, and pregnancy. That general guidance does not establish what treatment Hadid received or what any particular person should take. People concerned about possible Lyme disease or persistent symptoms should seek qualified medical evaluation rather than infer a diagnosis or treatment from a celebrity’s account.
