Steven Page, a Barenaked Ladies co-founder who left the band in 2009, sued his former bandmates and Warner-related companies over money from the group’s recording of The Big Bang Theory theme. A 2015 report on his complaint said he claimed a 20% share—at least $1 million. That was Page’s demand, not a court award. The case’s final disposition and whether his claimed share was later determined remain unverified in the available reporting.

What was the lawsuit about?

Barenaked Ladies recorded the theme for The Big Bang Theory in 2006, according to Courthouse News Service’s 2015 account of Page’s complaint. Page sued former bandmates Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Stewart, as well as Warner Bros. Television and Warner-Olive Music, in Los Angeles Superior Court. He alleged breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty. Courthouse News Service’s report describes allegations in the complaint; it does not establish that a court found misconduct.

Page and Robertson founded the band in 1988. Page left in 2009 to pursue a solo career, the report says. The dispute concerned how revenue from the theme recording was distributed after Page’s departure.

How much money did Steven Page claim?

Courthouse News Service reported that Page sought 20% of the money, which he said amounted to at least $1 million. He also asked that future Warner Bros. payments be sent directly to him and sought punitive damages from Robertson. These were requested remedies and figures attributed to Page’s claim—not money shown to have been awarded or paid.

The complaint, as described in the report, alleged that the recording generated “several million dollars” through thousands of broadcasts. It also said Page and Robertson each owned half of the long-form version of the song. The revenue estimate and ownership assertion are allegations in the lawsuit, not independently audited figures or findings. The report quoted the complaint’s line that one of the band’s successful songs, “If I Had a Million Dollars,” ends, “If I had a million dollars, I’d be rich.” That was a rhetorical line in the complaint, not a statement by the court.

Did Page win, lose, or settle the case?

The final outcome is not established by the available reporting. A later FandomWire retrospective says the California action was stayed in 2016, but that secondary account is not a verified court order and does not show what ultimately happened or whether another proceeding resolved Page’s claim. FandomWire’s retrospective should therefore be treated only as a report of a stay, not proof that Page won, lost, settled, or received payment.

Accordingly, the 20% and at-least-$1-million figures should be described as Page’s reported claim and demand. They do not answer whether he ultimately received any share.

Where does the theme appear in the band’s catalog?

A reference page for The Big Bang Theory reports that the theme appeared on Barenaked Ladies’ compilation Hits from Yesterday & the Day Before. That discography reference is secondary information; it does not establish the availability or current stock of a particular CD edition. The compilation’s inclusion of the song has no bearing on the legal dispute.
