For free books you can download and keep, start with Project Gutenberg or Standard Ebooks for public-domain classics; use Open Library to search a wider public-domain catalog. If you want a newer title, check Libby for a temporary loan from your local library. Choose based on the title you want, the formats it offers, and whether you want a file to keep or a library loan.

Which free-book site should you try first?

Service Best fit How access works Formats or reading options
Project Gutenberg Older works and classics whose U.S. copyright has expired Download a free ebook or read online; the site says no fee or registration is required Browser reading, EPUB3, Kindle, older Kindle/MOBI, and plain text; check the individual title page
Standard Ebooks Carefully formatted editions of public-domain works Download editions offered by the volunteer-driven project Check the individual book page for available formats
Open Library Finding public-domain full-text books across a broader catalog Download or read titles where full text is available Open Library’s undated FAQ lists PDF, EPUB, DAISY, DjVu, and ASCII text
Libby Books and audiobooks offered by a participating library Borrow through your library; availability and access requirements depend on the local library Check the title and library listing for supported reading options

Project Gutenberg’s homepage listed 79,556 free ebooks on October 8, 2026; that live catalog count can change. Open Library’s FAQ says it offers over 1.7 million public-domain books through its Internet Archive affiliation, but does not date that count.

1. Project Gutenberg: direct downloads of older books

Project Gutenberg is a practical starting point if you want an older book without a library loan. Its collection focuses on works whose U.S. copyright has expired, and the site offers both downloads and online reading. It says the books are free without fees or registration.

Open the book’s page and select a format that works with your device or reading app. Project Gutenberg documents browser reading, EPUB3, Kindle, older Kindle/MOBI, and plain text. It describes EPUB3 as the current ebook standard and says its EPUB and Kindle files are free of DRM. Some EPUBs generated from text may have formatting problems—for example, verse lines can run together or paragraphs may be marked as headings—so check the title’s download page and, when useful, preview the file in your reading app.

  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

2. Standard Ebooks: polished editions of public-domain works

When a title is available from both Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks, the latter is worth checking if you want a carefully formatted edition. The project is volunteer-driven and says its editions are free of cost and U.S. copyright restrictions. Its catalog does not include every title found elsewhere, so search before assuming a particular book is available.

3. Open Library: search a wider public-domain catalog

Open Library can help when you have not found a public-domain title on the first two sites. Its FAQ says its Internet Archive affiliation provides access to over 1.7 million public-domain books in PDF, EPUB, DAISY, DjVu, and ASCII text. Look at the individual listing to confirm whether the book is available as a full-text download and which formats it offers.

4. Libby: borrow books through your library

Libby is different from a download archive: it lets readers borrow ebooks and audiobooks offered through participating libraries. Search your local library’s catalog and check what account or card access it requires. The library’s holdings and lending rules vary by location, and a title may not be available to borrow immediately.

Choose by title, access, and device

  • For older classics: Search Project Gutenberg first, then Standard Ebooks if you want to compare editions.
  • For a wider public-domain search: Try Open Library and verify full-text availability on the title listing.
  • For books held by a library: Search Libby using your local library’s access details.
  • For format compatibility: Check the book’s download page and choose a file supported by your browser, phone, tablet, ereader, or reading app. You do not need to buy a dedicated ereader to use these services.
  • For a file you can keep: Choose a direct download where offered; library access through Libby is a loan, not the same as owning a downloaded book.

Check copyright and license terms

A book being free on a website does not mean every modern copyrighted title can be downloaded or shared without restriction. Project Gutenberg says nearly all individual works in its collection are public domain in the United States, while some are distributed with permission. Permission for the site to distribute a copyrighted title does not automatically permit users to redistribute it. Check the specific book’s title page and license before downloading or sharing, and account for the law where you live. Project Gutenberg advises: “If you are not located in the United States, you’ll have to check the laws of the country you live in before downloading our ebooks.”
