This curated selection follows his career rather than pretending there is one objective ranking of the images.
Val Kilmer as Iceman in Top Gun
Kilmer’s breakout role was Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Tony Scott’s Top Gun (1986), opposite Tom Cruise. A film still is the natural starting image: it conveys the competitive swagger that made the character instantly recognizable. The official biography identifies Iceman as his breakthrough, while Getty’s collection includes both film imagery and a captioned 1986 premiere-party photograph—two different ways to place the role in its original moment. Biography.com’s Val Kilmer biography and Getty Images’ Val Kilmer / Top Gun collection provide useful identification leads.
Early roles: Real Genius and Willow
Pictures from Real Genius (1985) and Willow (1988) widen the story beyond the fighter-pilot persona. The former offers a youthful comic mode; the latter places Kilmer in a fantasy-adventure world. A picture feature can use one still from each, where the specific image is properly identified and cleared, to show how quickly his screen presence moved between genres. The Guardian’s retrospective includes images from both films. The Guardian’s “Val Kilmer: a life in pictures” is a useful reference for film and image identification.
Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison in The Doors
In Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991), Kilmer portrayed the band’s frontman, Jim Morrison. A performance still makes a strong portrait because it records a deliberate transformation, not simply a familiar costume or a star pose. Kilmer’s official biography calls the portrayal memorable, and the Guardian retrospective includes an image explicitly captioned as Kilmer playing Morrison. Biography.com’s biography and The Guardian’s gallery support the role identification.

Doc Holliday in Tombstone
A still from Tombstone (1993) shows Kilmer as Doc Holliday, ideally in a scene with Kurt Russell’s Wyatt Earp. The exchange between the two actors gives the frame more context than a solo character portrait, while making clear which part Kilmer played. The role is among the memorable performances named in his official biography; the Guardian’s caption identifies a still featuring Russell and Kilmer as Holliday. The Guardian’s retrospective and Biography.com are references for the image and role.
Batman and Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever
Batman Forever (1995) brought Kilmer into one of the most visible studio roles of his career. A useful picture should be captioned with both the film and year, and distinguish Bruce Wayne from Batman when the image makes that distinction possible. The Guardian gallery includes a credited image with Chris O’Donnell, who played Robin. In the documentary Val, Kilmer reflected on the costume: “Whatever boyish excitement I had going in was crushed by the reality of the batsuit,” he said, describing how frustrating the experience was until he understood that his role was to “shut up and stand where I was told.” The quote and career context are reported by the Associated Press. Associated Press’ Val Kilmer obituary and The Guardian’s gallery offer context.

Chris Shiherlis in Heat
Michael Mann’s Heat (1995) gives a picture editor a different kind of ensemble image: Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, rather than one of the film’s lead stars. The Guardian’s credited still with Ashley Judd helps identify that role. The Associated Press also notes one of Shiherlis’s memorable lines: “For me, the sun rises and sets with her, man.” A caption should identify Kilmer’s character so the image does not blur him into the film’s larger ensemble. Associated Press’ obituary and The Guardian’s retrospective identify the line and image context.
Later roles: The Saint, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Top Gun: Maverick
To avoid making a career-spanning selection stop in the 1990s, consider a still from The Saint (1997) or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), both represented in the Guardian retrospective. For a later-career image, Top Gun: Maverick (2022) reconnects Kilmer with the role that launched his breakthrough; the Associated Press lists the film among his notable works. Choose images that make their film and date clear, rather than presenting the later appearance as interchangeable with the original Top Gun. The Guardian’s gallery and Associated Press provide role and film references.

Val Kilmer portraits and public appearances
Film stills show the characters; dated portraits and event photographs show Kilmer outside a role. Getty’s collection includes a 1988 Los Angeles portrait session and an appearance at a 2019 screening, as well as the 1986 premiere-party image. These examples can break up a run of movie frames and give readers a sense of the actor across different periods. Label each image accurately as a portrait, premiere, screening, or film still, and retain its supplied date and credit information where available. Getty Images’ collection provides caption context for those image types.

A strong selection balances career era, role recognizability, image type, and reliable caption and credit information. The Guardian’s retrospective supplies examples with credits such as William Nation/Sygma via Getty Images, Allstar/Tristar Pictures, Paramount/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock, Moviestore Collection/Alamy, and Everett Collection/REX. Getty’s captions likewise help distinguish film images from portraits and public appearances.
