Recommended Free Tools
There is no single best MMORPG for everyone. If you are choosing among the games highlighted in 2024, start with the experience you want: a story-led theme park, a player-run economy, open PvP, or a low-cost way to try the genre. “Free-to-play” means you can enter without buying the base game; it does not guarantee that every feature or convenience option is free.
How to choose an MMORPG
MMOs differ in focus, setting, and payment model, so a useful shortlist depends on your preferences rather than a universal ranking. PC Gamer’s guide makes those differences central to choosing a game: PC Gamer’s best MMOs guide. A 2024 guide similarly describes its selections as a mix of long-running classics and currently popular games, and notes that preferred worlds and tolerance for grinding matter: GamesRadar’s 2024 MMORPG guide.
- For story-led questing: look for a game built around authored quests and a continuing narrative.
- For a sandbox: prioritize games where crafting, trading, territory, or player decisions shape the experience.
- For combat risk: find out whether PvP is optional or central, and whether defeat can cost you equipment.
- For social play: check how much the game relies on parties, guilds, and large-group activities.
- For a low-commitment start: distinguish a free base game from a limited trial, subscription, or required purchase.
The available 2024 evidence supports these as comparison criteria, not a complete, verified catalogue of every game’s current platform, cross-play, or access terms.
MMORPGs to consider by player fit
Albion Online: economy, flexibility, and PvP risk
Albion Online is the clearest fit in this selection for players drawn to a player-driven economy and a mix of PvE and PvP. MMORPG.com selected it for Best Indie MMO and Best Mobile MMO in its 2024 awards; those are that outlet’s award choices, not a genre-wide ranking. The outlet highlighted its combination of PvE and PvP, economy, and distinctive setting. GameSpot’s later-current guide describes it as a free-to-play, top-down fantasy MMORPG with an optional subscription, classless combat, a player-run economy, and full-loot PvP: GameSpot’s MMO guide. Full-loot PvP makes the risk of player conflict a meaningful part of the choice, rather than a detail to overlook.

Final Fantasy XIV: a subscription-based story-first option
For readers seeking a story-led theme-park MMO, Final Fantasy XIV is a prominent option in the 2024 conversation. PC Gamer identifies it as subscription-based, so it should not be grouped with free-to-play games merely because it appears on a list of popular MMORPGs. Check the publisher’s current terms before starting; the available sources here do not establish trial limits or present-day pricing.
World of Warcraft: a long-running subscription MMO
World of Warcraft remained a major release story in 2024: PC Gamer’s year-in-review notes the launch of The War Within and the game’s 20th anniversary. That makes it a relevant established MMO to consider, but the anniversary and expansion do not make it free-to-play. PC Gamer’s 2024 context is summarized in its PC gaming year-in-review.

Guild Wars 2: buy-to-play, not free-to-play
Guild Wars 2 is another case where access labels matter. PC Gamer identifies it as buy-to-play, which is distinct from both free entry and an ongoing subscription. The reviewed sources do not establish current edition prices or which content is included in a purchase.
The Elder Scrolls Online: an expansion-era option
The Elder Scrolls Online received the Gold Road expansion in 2024. PC Gamer’s year-in-review writer assessed its reception negatively; that is the writer’s judgment, not an objective measure of player opinion. Consider it as an established fantasy setting, but do not treat the expansion’s arrival as evidence of consensus about the game’s quality.

City of Heroes: Homecoming: an officially licensed revival
In 2024, NCSoft granted an official license to City of Heroes: Homecoming. This distinguishes Homecoming from unofficial fan-server projects, a useful point for readers interested in returning to the superhero MMO. The year-in-review account does not establish current access terms or platform availability.
Brighter Shores: free-to-play early access in 2024
Brighter Shores, from RuneScape designer Andrew Gower, entered free-to-play early access in 2024, according to PC Gamer. Early access is not the same as a full commercial launch, so this is best treated as an option to sample in its 2024 development context, not as a finished release.

What “free-to-play” tells you—and what it doesn’t
Free-to-play indicates that a player can enter without buying the base game. It does not establish that all content, features, or convenience options are free, or that spending has no gameplay effects. The examples above make the distinctions concrete: Albion Online is described by GameSpot as free-to-play with an optional subscription; Final Fantasy XIV is subscription-based; Guild Wars 2 is buy-to-play. Before committing, verify current terms with the game’s official publisher or store, especially for expansions, trials, and recurring fees.
What the 2024 awards can—and cannot—tell you
MMORPG.com’s 2024 awards provide an editorial snapshot rather than an objective league table. Alongside Albion Online’s two awards, the outlet named New World: Aeternum Most Improved MMO and Ashes of Creation Most Anticipated. The latter was still in development, so it belongs in a watchlist, not among released games to play in 2024. See the outlet’s 2024 MMORPG awards for its selections.

That distinction matters when using “best” lists: an award reflects the publication’s choice and criteria, while a game’s fit depends on whether you want narrative questing, an economy shaped by players, PvP risk, or a particular payment model.
