Christmas scenes that capture joy, childhood and family
Elf: Buddy hears Santa is coming
At Gimbel’s, Buddy hears that Santa is arriving and bursts out, “Santa, I know him!” It is a compact expression of the character’s open-hearted excitement. Rotten Tomatoes named it the film’s memorable moment; Will Ferrell said the “Santa, I know him” playing was improvised. Director Jon Favreau said his original pitch was “to make it feel like Buddy was a human that grew up in a ’60s Christmas special.” The filmmakers had hoped to shoot at Macy’s, but did not want the store to seem to have a fake Santa, so they used fictional Gimbel’s, a nod to Miracle on 34th Street. Rotten Tomatoes’ interview and feature covers the scene and its production context.

A Christmas Story: Ralphie meets the department-store Santa
Ralphie’s visit to Santa brings a child’s urgent Christmas wish—the Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Air Rifle—into a crowded department store. The encounter is memorable partly because the holiday setting feels tangible: the scene was staged at Cleveland’s Higbee’s, where the production built Santa’s Mountain on the main floor. The American Film Institute also records the production’s resourceful snow effects: potato flakes for falling snow, shredded vinyl for set dressing, and firefighter’s foam for snow on the ground, trees and houses. AFI’s account of A Christmas Story provides those details.
Home Alone: the reunion behind the traps
The traps are the obvious comic attraction, but the film’s emotional resolution gives the holiday story a warmer center. Director Chris Columbus added Scary Old Man Marley to bring seriousness to the comedy and give Kevin a lesson in forgiveness and family, according to the American Film Institute. That makes the reunion a fitting counterpoint to the slapstick: the story is not only about defending a house, but about recognizing the value of family. For a gentler adult-character moment, AFI notes that John Candy improvised the scene in which his character tells Catherine O’Hara’s character about his band. AFI’s Home Alone feature discusses both choices.

When the holiday plan goes spectacularly wrong
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: the family Christmas that unravels
Clark Griswold is chasing the perfect family Christmas; relatives arrive, expectations clash and the plan comes apart. That collision between idealized holiday cheer and family friction makes the film a distinctively comic pick. The American Film Institute reports that John Hughes based the screenplay on his magazine short story “Christmas ’59.” Filming took place in Colorado during summer 1989 and at studio locations in Burbank; the Griswold house was shot on the Warner Bros. backlot. AFI’s Christmas Vacation feature provides the production background.
Die Hard: gunfire and glass at Christmas
For a holiday scene built around action rather than cozy tradition, the glass-shooting sequence delivers sharp contrasts: gunfire, shattering glass and Alan Rickman’s clearly audible line. In its December 24, 2025 scene guide, What Hi-Fi? recommends the sequence for its rear-channel gunfire and high-frequency glass effects. It is a Christmas-set moment whose seasonal context shares the frame with the film’s action and sound design. Read What Hi-Fi?’s scene guide.

A New Year’s Eve scene about saying what matters
When Harry Met Sally: Harry’s declaration to Sally
Christmas does not own the movie holiday season. In When Harry Met Sally, New Year’s Eve becomes the turning point for Harry’s declaration of love and the couple’s kiss. The scene trades spectacle for conversation and emotional timing, making it a romantic counterweight to the Christmas comedies and action pick above. TIME’s roundup of New Year’s Eve movie scenes describes the moment and also names alternatives in The Gold Rush, The Godfather: Part II, Radio Days and Ghostbusters II.

These scenes are strongest for different reasons: Elf for unfiltered delight, A Christmas Story for childhood anticipation and seasonal atmosphere, Home Alone for comedy with a family resolution, Christmas Vacation for holiday chaos, Die Hard for action and sound, and When Harry Met Sally for romance at a turning point. The list is a US-focused selection, not a representative survey of holiday cinema worldwide or a claim that these are objectively the best scenes.
