Guts’s life moves from battlefield survival to hard-won belonging, then through devastating loss toward the effort to protect other people. The manga first introduces him as a hardened, revenge-driven swordsman, then returns to the past to show how he became that person.
Why Berserk tells Guts’s story out of order
The reader’s first encounter with Guts is not the beginning of his life. The official story chart places the Black Swordsman section before the Golden Age, so the manga shows his anger and isolation before revealing the relationships and decisions that shaped them. In lived chronology, the Golden Age events come first; in reading order, the Black Swordsman opening comes first.

That gap is central to the effect: at first, Guts looks defined by vengeance. The backstory gradually reveals what he once found in the Band of the Hawk—and what was taken from him.
Guts’s life, in chronological order
Born into violence
Guts is born on a battlefield beneath his dead mother’s corpse and grows up amid war, eventually living as a mercenary. His early life teaches him to depend on his sword and to treat closeness as a danger rather than a refuge. The official Berserk story synopsis frames his childhood around this beginning in violence.

The Band of the Hawk gives him a place to belong
Griffith defeats Guts and brings him into the Band of the Hawk. Fighting alongside the group and enduring hardship with them gives Guts a kind of connection he had not let himself trust before. The band becomes more than an employer: it is a community, and Griffith becomes the person whose ambitions and judgment matter most to him.
Guts leaves to find a life of his own
Griffith’s understanding of friendship changes the way Guts sees their bond. To Griffith, a true friend is someone with an independent reason to live, not simply a follower who exists within another person’s dream. Guts begins to wonder whether he has a purpose of his own or is only helping Griffith pursue his. He leaves the Hawks to seek that answer.
Rank #2
The departure is a turning point, not a clean escape. The band’s fortunes collapse; Griffith is imprisoned; and the attempt to rescue him leads into the Eclipse, a catastrophic rupture that destroys the life Guts had built with his comrades. It is the defining loss behind the hardened figure from the opening. Berserk depicts graphic violence and sexual violence; the significance of this trauma does not require dwelling on its graphic details.
From solitary vengeance toward responsibility
After the Eclipse, Guts’s life is driven by revenge and by the consequences of what happened to those close to him. As the story proceeds, his focus expands: he takes responsibility for Casca and travels with companions rather than remaining entirely alone. The official arc chart confirms that the story moves beyond the original revenge premise, but its summaries do not provide a detailed account of every later event. This overview therefore follows the broad direction of his change rather than claiming to cover the latest chapter beat by beat.
How the manga’s arcs fit together
Hakusensha’s official story chart gives this reading-order sequence. Its volume ranges are the chart’s labels, not a complete timeline of every present-day event.
| Section | Volumes on the official chart | Role in Guts’s story |
|---|---|---|
| Black Swordsman | 1–3 | Introduces the hardened, revenge-driven Guts before the reader knows the full history behind him. |
| Golden Age | 3–21 | Reveals his life with the Band of the Hawk, his departure, and the Eclipse. |
| Conviction | 22–35 | Continues the story after the Golden Age’s catastrophic break. |
| Millennium Falcon | 35 onward on the chart | Continues the later story beyond the original revenge premise. |
| Fantasia | No volume range stated on the chart | Names a later section of the story; the chart does not supply a volume range for it. |
Because the chart’s ranges overlap at volumes 3 and 35, use them as section markers rather than as exclusive boundaries.

What Miura said about the story’s beginning
In a 2015 interview hosted by manga brog, Kentaro Miura recalled, “up until volume three all I had in mind was that it would be a story about anger.” He said the idea of making the object of Guts’s anger a friend or contemporary—and drawing on his own experience of friendship—helped the Band of the Hawk and the deeper story take shape. This is Miura’s account in that interview, rather than a statement from the series’ publisher.

Hakusensha announced Berserk’s resumption in June 2022 with Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga. Mori, Miura’s friend, described a limited approach to the continuation: he would only write the episodes that Miura had talked to him about, would not flesh them out, and would not write episodes that he did not remember clearly. Posthumous continuation material should therefore be distinguished from chapters Miura completed himself, and Mori’s stated approach should be understood as his description of what he would write—not as a claim that every later story detail was published in Miura’s own hand.

Where to read Guts’s story
For the story itself, the manga is the direct route: follow its published order, beginning with the Black Swordsman section, rather than rearranging the arcs into chronology. Dark Horse Direct described Dark Horse as Berserk’s English-language publisher since 2003 and, in a January 2022 article, listed 41 single-volume paperbacks alongside a deluxe hardcover line. Those are dated format details, not a statement about current stock or pricing. The same article discussed licensed Guts and Griffith bookends as a past product offering; it does not establish present availability.
For publication context, Hakusensha’s June 2022 statement said that the first edition of volume one was 28,000 copies and that the volume had been read by 2 million people worldwide at that time. Those figures describe that dated statement, not current readership or total series sales.
