Benedetta is Paul Verhoeven’s 2021 dramatic feature about Benedetta Carlini, a young nun in late-seventeenth-century Tuscany whose visions and relationship with a novice unsettle her convent. It draws on a historical case and Judith C. Brown’s nonfiction book Immodest Acts, but it is a cinematic adaptation—not a documentary record of every event it depicts.
What is Benedetta about?
Set in Pescia, Tuscany, during a plague outbreak in the late seventeenth century, the film follows Benedetta as she enters a convent and begins experiencing religious visions. The official synopsis describes a forbidden relationship with a novice that threatens the convent and the Church. That is the film’s premise, not independent confirmation that every scene or detail is historically documented. The official film synopsis uses the phrase “Based on a true story” to frame its story.
Paul Verhoeven directed the film, with Virginie Efira as Benedetta. The Festival de Cannes credits David Birke and Verhoeven with the screenplay and lists Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Daphne Patakia, Lambert Wilson and others in the cast. Cannes’ film record places it in the 2021 competition.
Is Benedetta based on a true story?
It is based on a historical case, but should not be treated as a documentary. Cannes identifies Judith C. Brown’s Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy as the work that drew Verhoeven to the story; the Académie des César also lists Brown’s book as the film’s source. These credits establish the book’s role in the film’s development, not the historical accuracy of each dramatized event.

A 9 July 2021 Cannes article about the film notes that few archival documents detail lesbian relationships within seventeenth-century Italian convents. The available evidence therefore supports describing Benedetta as a dramatic interpretation rooted in a historical case, rather than claiming that the film reproduces a fully documented account.
How does the film differ from Immodest Acts?
The two works serve different purposes. Benedetta is a feature film that selects and dramatizes events through Verhoeven’s interpretation. Brown’s Immodest Acts is the nonfiction historical study cited as the source and inspiration. Readers seeking the historical account behind the film should start with Brown’s book; the film itself cannot establish historical fact simply by depicting it.
