Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were extras in the Fenway Park crowd scene in Field of Dreams, not speaking-role cast members. Affleck’s later recollection adds a vivid detail: he remembered Kevin Costner taking batting practice and hitting balls off Fenway’s Green Monster—and joked that Damon later seemed to tell the story as if the batting feat were his own.
Were Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in Field of Dreams?
Yes, in the limited sense that they did extra work as part of the crowd in the film’s Fenway Park scene. They were young aspiring actors at the time. Accounts of the story identify them as extras; they do not establish that either had a line or a credited speaking role. TIME’s retrospective and MLB’s feature describe the Fenway connection.
What did Kevin Costner remember about meeting them?
Costner later recalled meeting the two young men on set. In Us Weekly’s report, he described them leaning in, leaning back, and looking at each other in sync while talking with him: “And they would both lean in at the same time, lean back at the same time, look at each other at the same time.” Us Weekly reported the recollection.
Affleck, by contrast, said Costner was being kind by claiming to remember them. The clip description attributes this concise line to Affleck: “Kevin is being kind saying he remembers us, because we were not memorable.” That skepticism makes sense in the context he gave: they were among many extras in a crowd scene.

What did Affleck say about Costner’s batting practice?
Affleck remembered Costner taking batting practice at Fenway Park and hitting balls off the Green Monster. The clip description attributes the phrase “he banged a bunch of balls off the Green Monster” to Affleck’s account. Affleck then teased Damon, saying that Damon later seemed to recount the batting-practice memory as though it belonged to him.
That is Affleck’s humorous retelling, not an independently verified disagreement about who hit the balls. The available clip is a repost with a descriptive summary, so the short quoted phrases here are attributed to that description rather than presented as a full interview transcript.

How did Affleck and Damon cross paths with the director again?
MLB’s account offers another small link between the film and their later careers: while working with director Phil Alden Robinson on The Sum of All Fears, Affleck reportedly told him, “Nice working with you again.” MLB attributes the anecdote to Robinson’s recollection and identifies Affleck and Damon among the Fenway crowd extras.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is a small early-career credit, not a speaking-role appearance
The distinction matters when describing the connection. The accounts support saying that Affleck and Damon did extra work in the Fenway crowd scene; they do not support calling them performers with speaking parts in Field of Dreams. The story is chiefly a recollection of a brief set encounter, viewed years later through Costner’s memory and Affleck’s amused response.
