The first trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts arrived on December 1, 2022, bringing Beast Wars characters including Optimus Primal and Cheetor into live action. Set in the 1990s, the film also brings familiar Autobots such as Optimus Prime and Bumblebee into a story involving the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons.
What the first trailer shows
The trailer’s defining reveal is the Maximals: Transformers who take animal forms. Optimus Primal and Cheetor are among the Beast Wars characters introduced in live action. Their appearance gives the film a new visual and character connection to the Beast Wars branch of the franchise.
They are not the only familiar faces. Optimus Prime and Bumblebee appear alongside Mirage, while the Terrorcons are presented as antagonists. The trailer therefore pairs the Beast Wars connection with established Transformers characters rather than leaving the older factions behind.
How Beast Wars fits into the film
Beast Wars is a Transformers branch associated with characters who transform into animals, and its legacy includes toys as well as animated stories. In Rise of the Beasts, Optimus Primal is a Maximal. Paramount’s synopsis also names Predacons and Terrorcons, placing these groups in a larger conflict with Autobots and Decepticons.

Setting and story context
Paramount describes the movie as a 1990s globetrotting adventure. Its official synopsis, reproduced by ScreenCrush, says Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure and introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.
The synopsis establishes the factions and broad premise, but does not explain the detailed mechanics of how the new groups enter the conflict.

For viewers who know the franchise mainly through Autobots and Decepticons, Optimus Primal and Cheetor signal a substantial addition to the character roster. For Beast Wars fans, their live-action appearance brings a recognizable branch of Transformers into the films. The trailer’s main promise is this meeting of eras and factions, not a detailed account of the story ahead.
