Mike Birbiglia’s The Good Life began with a question from his daughter about a neighborhood smoke shop sign. It became a personal stage show about family, fatherhood and how to live—and, later, a Netflix special released May 26, 2025. The live show’s first performance came earlier, at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on March 22, 2025.
What is The Good Life about?
Netflix describes Mike Birbiglia: The Good Life as a 2025 stand-up comedy special in which Birbiglia reevaluates life as both a son and a father. Its synopsis points to stories involving drugs, marriage and children’s parties. The family perspective is central: release coverage connects the show’s subject matter to his father’s recent stroke and to Birbiglia reconsidering his own approach to fatherhood.
The special is available through Netflix. Its catalog page lists English audio, English audio description and subtitle options, which can vary by region; check the local listing for current availability and language choices.
How did the title begin?
In an interview with NPR, Birbiglia traced the title to a smoke shop in his neighborhood called The Good Life. His daughter saw the name and asked, “Dad, what’s The Good Life?” He called it a “multipronged question.” The ordinary sign gave him a way into a larger question the show takes up: what does a good life mean when you are a child, a parent and a person trying to make sense of family?

Why does Birbiglia call this show especially personal?
Birbiglia said the material felt more exposed than his earlier personal shows because it was about his life as it was unfolding, rather than a settled period in the past. In BroadwayWorld’s April 8, 2025 release coverage, he said: “Over the years, I’ve done a lot of personal shows but somehow this one is the most personal because it’s not in my past. It’s my life right now. So there’s really no filter. At certain points during the tour I literally thought on stage: ‘Whoa. Am I really gonna tell this story?’”
He also described the comic impulse behind that candor: “I try to probe into what’s most painful in order to figure out what’s most funny.” That account helps explain the balance the show seeks between difficult family material and comedy; it does not mean every story is simply a confession or that the special presents a complete account of his private life.

How did the stage show reach Netflix?
The stage production and the Netflix recording have distinct milestones. Concord Theatricals’ acting edition says the show was first performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on March 22, 2025. Netflix released the special on May 26, 2025. April 2025 release coverage described it as Birbiglia’s fourth Netflix comedy special.
The available credits document the stage show’s creative team, not every step of the recording or editing process. They show how a one-person storytelling performance was shaped for the stage; the interviews provide additional context about how collaborators helped refine its storytelling.
Who made the stage production?
The credits below are from the Concord Theatricals acting edition, which records the show’s first performance and production roles.

What did the collaborators contribute?
Birbiglia told NPR that Glass and Barrish pushed him to make sure the show had enough pathos and revelation. He identified Glass, known for This American Life, as a story consultant. That gives a glimpse of the editorial collaboration behind the performance: the work was not only about collecting personal anecdotes, but also about finding the emotional disclosures that make the stories land.

A Vanity Fair interview also discusses Birbiglia’s approach to developing and ordering material, collaborating and receiving critique. Those accounts offer process context, while the Concord edition supplies the formal production credits; neither establishes a full rehearsal history or detailed account of how the Netflix recording was made.
