Coward. Victim: The Story of Roy Cohn. It traces Cohn’s political and personal life well beyond his role as Donald Trump’s mentor, offering nonfiction context for the relationship that the later feature film dramatizes. It is a separate work, not a fact-check of every scene in The Apprentice.
What is the HBO documentary about Roy Cohn?
Bully. Coward. Victim: The Story of Roy Cohn is a documentary directed by Ivy Meeropol for HBO. The film follows Cohn from his work as chief counsel to Senator Joseph McCarthy in the late 1950s through his place in Reagan-era political circles, his public anti-homosexuality activism, his mentorship of Trump, and his death from AIDS in 1986. HBO describes Trump as Cohn’s client, protégé, and close friend. HBO’s film description and press release outline that broader arc.
That span matters: Cohn’s connection to Trump is a major part of the story, but it is not the whole subject. The documentary places their relationship alongside Cohn’s earlier political work and later public life.
What does it add to The Apprentice?
The Apprentice, released in 2024, is a dramatic feature about a young Trump and his relationship with Cohn. Screenwriter Gabe Sherman described its concept to the Associated Press as an origin story and a mentor–protégé story. Meeropol’s HBO film came earlier and takes a different approach: it is a nonfiction portrait centered on Cohn across several decades, rather than a dramatization of Trump’s early career. The Associated Press interview with Sherman describes the feature’s premise.
#1 Best Overall
- The disk DOES NOT have French audio and subtitles.
| Film | Format and focus | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bully. Coward. Victim: The Story of Roy Cohn | HBO documentary directed by Ivy Meeropol; follows Cohn across his political and personal life. | Watch for a wider nonfiction account of Cohn and the context around his relationship with Trump. |
| The Apprentice (2024) | Dramatic feature centered on young Trump and Cohn’s mentorship. | Watch as a dramatized origin story, not as a documentary record. |
The distinction is about form and focus, not a verdict that one film is more accurate overall. The documentary can broaden the context for the feature, but it does not establish that every scene or interpretation in the drama is historically verified.
What is established about Trump and Cohn’s connection?
PBS FRONTLINE’s President Trump documentary says Trump hired Cohn in 1973 to defend him and his father. That is a concrete point in the relationship’s timeline, attributed here to PBS rather than to HBO’s documentary description. PBS FRONTLINE’s President Trump provides that account.

Why Ivy Meeropol’s perspective is part of the story
Meeropol is the granddaughter of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, whom Cohn prosecuted. In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, she said Trump’s election prompted her to make the documentary, and that she wanted a new film rather than a sequel to her earlier family documentary, Heir to an Execution. She also spoke about approaching Cohn as a complex person. The Guardian interview gives her account of the project and its personal context.
Meeropol described her intention this way: “I wanted it to be something new.” She also said of Cohn, “He is a complex person. I had to decide to have a little empathy for him.” Those are the director’s reflections on making the film, not independent historical findings.

Another Cohn documentary to consider
Matt Tyrnauer’s Where’s My Roy Cohn? is a separate 2019 documentary, not another title for Meeropol’s HBO film. Sony Pictures Classics says Tyrnauer built his film from interviews, television appearances, and Ken Auletta’s previously unheard 1970s audio interview with Cohn. Sony Pictures Classics’ film page describes its materials.
