The Noah Wyle sci-fi show produced by Steven Spielberg is Falling Skies. Wyle stars as Tom Mason, a Boston history professor who joins a human resistance after an alien invasion. The five-season TNT series ran from 2011 to 2015, and it offers a very different Wyle role from the medical dramas many viewers know him for.
What is Falling Skies about?
The story opens in the aftermath of an alien attack that has incapacitated much of the world. Tom Mason becomes one of the leaders of the 2nd Mass, a resistance group formed in Boston. His background as a history professor gives him a distinctive perspective on survival and conflict.
Moon Bloodgood plays Anne Glass, the group’s primary medic, while Will Patton plays Captain Weaver, another resistance leader. The ensemble also includes Drew Roy and Maxim Knight. Amblin describes the series as “a tale of the endurance, commitment and courage in which everyday people are called upon to become heroes.” Amblin’s official series page
Why is Steven Spielberg associated with the series?
Spielberg is credited as an executive producer. Amblin also credits creator Robert Rodat with writing the pilot from an idea he co-conceived with Spielberg. That makes Falling Skies a Spielberg-produced series, though Rodat is its creator and the show’s central performance belongs to Wyle as Tom Mason. Amblin’s credits and synopsis

How does Wyle’s role differ from his medical-drama work?
In Falling Skies, Wyle is not a doctor: Tom Mason is a history professor thrust into leadership during an invasion. The premise shifts his familiar screen presence into science fiction, where Mason’s responsibilities are tied to organizing resistance and protecting people rather than practicing medicine. Netflix’s January 8, 2026 retrospective likewise frames the series as Wyle battling an alien invasion between his medical dramas. Netflix Tudum’s feature on the series
