Did Beethoven Die of Lead Poisoning? What New Hair Analysis Shows

A famous lock behind the old lead-poisoning theory was not Beethoven’s hair. Two authenticated locks showed high lead, but the authors say it was not enough to identify lead as the sole cause of death.

New analysis complicates—not settles—the claim that Ludwig van Beethoven died from lead poisoning. A famous lock used to support the older theory was not Beethoven’s hair, but two authenticated locks later showed high lead concentrations. The 2024 study’s authors said those levels could have contributed to illness but were not high enough to establish lead as the sole cause of his death.

Why the old lead-poisoning argument changed

The earlier case for lead poisoning relied heavily on a lock known as the Hiller lock. In 2023, researchers analyzed Beethoven’s genome from five locks they judged almost certainly authentic and found that the Hiller lock was not Beethoven’s hair. That finding undermines conclusions drawn from the Hiller sample; it does not show that Beethoven had no harmful lead exposure.

What the authenticated locks revealed

In a 2024 letter in Clinical Chemistry, researchers reported toxicological analysis of two authenticated locks: the Bermann and Halm-Thayer locks. Both contained high lead concentrations, along with findings of other toxic elements reported by the authors.

Authenticated lock Reported lead concentration
Bermann 64 times the upper limit the authors considered typical in a healthy person
Halm-Thayer 95 times the upper limit the authors considered typical in a healthy person

The authors estimated that the results could correspond to blood lead levels of 69–71 micrograms per deciliter. That is an estimate, not a direct measurement of Beethoven’s blood: hair lead is not a reliable direct proxy for blood lead, and hair can be contaminated. The report says the researchers used protocols to remove external contaminants before analysis.

What the findings do—and do not—say about his death

The 2024 authors wrote: “Such lead levels are commonly associated with gastrointestinal and renal ailments and decreased hearing but are not considered high enough to be the sole cause of death.” They said lead exposure could have contributed to Beethoven’s documented ailments, but their findings do not establish lead poisoning as the single cause of death.

The distinction matters: a high concentration in authenticated hair supports evidence of exposure, while the study authors’ interpretation limits what can be concluded about cause of death. The analysis challenges the old argument based on the Hiller lock without ruling out lead as a contributing factor.

What the genome study adds

The 2023 genomic analysis found evidence of hepatitis B virus and genetic risk factors for liver disease. The researchers described these, alongside alcohol consumption, as plausible contributors to liver disease; they did not identify one individually decisive cause of death. The genomic findings are separate from the 2024 chemical measurements: they offer context about possible health risks, not a definitive answer to what killed Beethoven.

That genome study also did not settle the causes of Beethoven’s hearing loss or digestive problems. The lead findings may be relevant to those ailments, but they do not resolve them.

How to read the headline

  • What is overturned: the Hiller lock cannot be treated as evidence about Beethoven because genomic analysis found it was not his hair.
  • What remains supported: two authenticated locks contained high lead concentrations.
  • What is not established: hair measurements do not directly prove a particular blood lead level, and neither study identifies a definitive single cause of death.
