What is the film about?
Set more than a decade after the first Avatar, the sequel follows Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their children. When they leave their home, they seek refuge in Metkayina territory and must adapt to an ocean-centered community, according to Disney’s title page.
Disney News quoted producer Jon Landau describing the film’s themes as concerning the environment and people accepting others’ differences. The story’s family focus and move into a new community give that theme its narrative context.

The official 20th Century Studios film page lists Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, 4K Ultra HD, and digital editions. The film’s theatrical release was December 16, 2022. These formats provide alternatives to a streaming subscription, though current availability and prices depend on retailer and country.
For streaming, check the title listing in your country before subscribing: the announcements document the June 2023 debut, not present-day catalog availability on Max or Disney+ across markets. Plan features and prices can also change.

Why the 2023 streaming debut drew attention
In its May 15, 2023 announcement, Disney said the film had earned nearly $2.32 billion worldwide during its theatrical run and called it the third highest-grossing film of all time at that point. That is a historical figure and ranking from Disney’s announcement, not a current ranking.
