For a first cyberpunk anime, start with Ghost in the Shell (1995) if you want a feature-length exploration of cybernetic identity, or Cyberpunk: Edgerunners if you want a fast, self-contained series. This ranking weighs how centrally each title engages cyberpunk, how distinctive its approach is, its significance where supported, and how well it works as a recommendation. It is an editorial shortlist, not a universal canon; films and series are judged on what their different formats do best.

Ghost in the Shell (1995 film)
For a concentrated, idea-driven cyberpunk feature, Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film is the strongest starting point on this list. It brings cyberbrains, cyborg embodiment, networked identity, cybercrime and political power into one searching story. The official franchise site describes Ghost in the Shell as a landmark work of cyberpunk science fiction and traces the franchise to Masamune Shirow’s 1989 manga: official franchise introduction.
Choose this film for its measured pace and philosophical focus rather than expecting the more expansive plotting of a television series. It is one distinct version of the franchise, not a stand-in for its other anime continuities.
-
Akira (1988 film)
Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira is the pick for kinetic action and a sprawling urban dystopia. Released in Japan on July 16, 1988, the animated feature makes the city itself feel volatile and consequential. It offers a different route into cyberpunk than Ghost in the Shell: less centered on cyberbrains and identity, more driven by scale, motion and social breakdown.

Serial Experiments Lain (1998 series)
This 13-episode series is the most abstract recommendation here. It turns networked life, communication, reality and personal identity into a slow, unsettling puzzle. Cyberpunk is among its stated creative influences, but its appeal lies as much in its ambiguity and atmosphere as in familiar genre imagery.
Choose Lain if you are willing to sit with uncertainty and want cyberpunk filtered through questions about what connection does to the self. It is a series, so its ideas have room to accumulate in a way a feature cannot replicate.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022 series)
For high energy and an immediately legible cyberpunk setting, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the easiest series recommendation. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive and become an edgerunner in a city shaped by advanced technology and body modification. Its emphasis on bodily change and urban survival makes it a direct fit for viewers seeking a contemporary, high-tech dystopia.

Psycho-Pass (2012 first season)
Psycho-Pass earns a place as a surveillance dystopia: its first season examines how predictive systems and state monitoring can shape justice and behavior. It is less direct a genre fit than titles focused on cyborg bodies or networked identity. Academic discussion describes the first season as “post-cyberpunk,” making it a useful adjacent entry rather than a template for the genre.
Choose it for procedural storytelling and questions about automated judgment and social control. This recommendation is specifically for the first season, not a blanket ranking of every installment in the franchise.

The new THE GHOST IN THE SHELL television anime is a separate current option, not another name for Oshii’s 1995 film. Its official website describes a near-future Japan, Motoko Kusanagi’s cybercrime unit and an investigation involving the mysterious hacker called the Puppet Master. The site showed “Now Streaming” and listed a final episode update in September 2026 when accessed: official series website. That status is time-sensitive, and the site does not establish territory-specific streaming availability.

For franchise context, the official introduction identifies the 1989 manga as the starting point and discusses the property’s development across media: official franchise introduction. Keep the 1995 film and the 2026 television series distinct when selecting a first watch; the available information here does not establish a continuity relationship between them.
Other titles worth exploring
Cyber City Oedo 808, Bubblegum Crisis, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 and Blade Runner: Black Lotus are further candidates for a broader cyberpunk watchlist. They are not ranked here because the available source material does not establish enough primary detail to compare them confidently with the five picks above.
