If you want an electric guitar with an ash body, the clearest current options in the manufacturer listings here are Fender’s Player II Telecaster and Standard Telecaster. Both lines include chambered ash among their body choices, but neither line is ash-only: check the exact configuration on the guitar you plan to buy. Choose by the whole instrument—feel, balance, pickups, neck and finish—not by assuming ash guarantees a particular tone.
Which ash electric guitars are worth considering?
These Fender Telecasters are useful starting points because Fender lists chambered ash as an available body material for both. The listings describe options across a model line, not a promise that every finish, region or retailer item uses ash.
| Model | Body material options stated | Other listed specifications | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fender Player II Telecaster | Alder, chambered ash or chambered mahogany | Player Series Alnico V Tele single-coil pickups; Modern “C” neck; 9.5-inch-radius maple or rosewood fingerboard; six-saddle string-through Tele bridge with block steel saddles | Confirm the specific guitar is the chambered-ash configuration, and check its finish and availability. |
| Fender Standard Telecaster | Pine, poplar or chambered ash across the compared options | Fender lists a guitar case separately as a recommended item, not as an included part of the comparison listing. | Confirm the market, exact model configuration and whether a case is included or sold separately. |
These are line-level specifications from Fender, not a controlled comparison of otherwise identical ash and non-ash guitars. A model family’s material options do not establish what a particular seller has in stock.
How to choose the right ash Telecaster
Start with the exact guitar, rather than the wood name in a headline or search result. Ask the retailer or check the item specification for the body material and whether it is chambered. Then compare the details that determine how the instrument fits your playing and budget.

- Weight and balance: Look for the actual instrument’s weight where available, and consider how it balances on a strap. The listed body material alone does not tell you how a particular guitar will feel.
- Pickups: Check the pickup type and layout against the sounds and switching options you want. The Player II specifications above identify single-coil Tele pickups.
- Neck and fingerboard: Compare neck profile, fingerboard material and radius. The Player II listing specifies a Modern “C” neck and a 9.5-inch-radius maple or rosewood fingerboard.
- Bridge and hardware: Check the bridge design and tuning hardware as part of the complete configuration. The Player II listing names a six-saddle string-through bridge with block steel saddles.
- Finish and appearance: If visible grain is part of the appeal, inspect photos of the exact finish and ask whether they show the actual configuration. A finish may obscure the wood’s appearance.
- Total cost: Compare the current price for the exact guitar and account for any case or other essentials sold separately. No current price or live stock is established here.
There is no source-supported sound test here showing that ash alone produces a better tone than alder, pine, poplar or mahogany in otherwise identical guitars. Treat wood as one selection detail, not a guaranteed upgrade.
What ash does—and does not—tell you about tone
Fender says its Telecaster and Stratocaster bodies are mostly alder, while ash, mahogany and other woods have also been used. Its guidance is to avoid letting tonewood stereotypes lead the decision. As Fender puts it in “Fender Stratocaster vs Telecaster: Difference in Tone, Sound, Body, Electronics”, “The best thing to do is refuse to let the stereotypes themselves lead you down a certain path.”

Fender’s support article on tonewoods says the company will seldom, if ever, use Northern Ash. That is a statement about Fender’s own current practice; it should not be generalized to every maker or to every historic guitar. Fender Custom Shop’s 2026 Custom Shop Design Guide describes roasted ash as “Strong and ultra-stable.” That description concerns roasted ash in that design context; it does not establish that ash by itself determines a guitar’s sound.
