There is no evidence-backed universal winner for narration. If you want the listing that explicitly identifies its text as the original 1937 edition, consider the Erik Synnestvedt recording. For updated examples and terminology, consider Joel Fotinos’s revised edition; for a shorter orientation, the Napoleon Hill Foundation’s Modern Reader recording is described as a synopsis, not the complete book. Choose by edition, completeness, narrator sample and stated duration—not by the title alone.
Which audio version fits your priority?
| Your priority | Recording to consider | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Original 1937 text | Erik Synnestvedt | Audible explicitly identifies the text as the original 1937 edition. That confirms the listing’s edition claim, not that its narration is superior to other recordings. |
| Original-era text with additional front matter | Joe Slattery | The listing gives copyright information for 1937 and 1960 and credits a 2011 introduction by Sharon Lechter. Those details do not establish that every word matches another recording. |
| Updated examples and terminology | Joel Fotinos | The listing calls it “The Landmark Bestseller Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century” and describes updated examples and terminology by Arthur R. Pell. This is the edition’s stated approach, not proof that the original is obsolete. |
| Shorter-form introduction to the ideas | Rich Germaine, Think and Grow Rich: For the Modern Reader | Audible describes this official Napoleon Hill Foundation publication as a synopsis extracting key principles, instructions and examples. It is not presented as a complete, unabridged reading of the book. |
| Another recording labeled “1937 Edition” | Mark White | The listing is labeled “1937 Edition” and gives a 2019 publication/production date. It provides no independent comparison of narration quality. |
| Newer production | Zac West | The listing carries a 2025 copyright and presents the book as revised and updated for the 21st century. A newer production date does not establish better fidelity or performance. |
How to compare editions before buying
First decide whether you want Hill’s original-era text or an edition that updates examples and terminology. Then check whether the listing describes a full book or a synopsis. These are different listening experiences, even when the title is similar.
- Check the edition claim: Look for explicit wording such as “original 1937 edition” or “revised and updated for the 21st century.” Do not assume listings with the same main title use identical text.
- Check completeness: “Synopsis” means a condensed treatment of selected material, not a synonym for unabridged.
- Listen to a sample: Compare voice, pacing and pronunciation against your own preferences. The listings do not establish an objectively best narrator.
- Check duration and extras: Look for the stated runtime and any introduction or editorial material. The Joe Slattery listing, for example, credits a 2011 introduction.
What the listed duration can—and cannot—tell you
Audible Canada lists the Russ Williams recording as 10 hours and 15 minutes and marks it unabridged on its Classic Listens page. This is a useful data point for that specific listing, not a duration that can be applied to every edition. Runtime alone also does not tell you whether a version uses the text you want or whether you will enjoy its narration.
Is any narrator definitively the best?
The available listings establish edition descriptions, production details and, for one Canadian listing, a duration and unabridged label. They do not provide a controlled comparison of sound quality, performance or listener preference. Ratings on a curated retailer page are not a reliable substitute for that comparison. A practical choice is to select the text first, then sample the narrator and confirm the runtime on the exact regional listing before purchasing.
