The essential refresher: the Rage Virus turns living people into violent, infected attackers; 28 Days Later follows the first outbreak and Jim’s awakening, 28 Weeks Later shows an attempted recovery six months on, and 28 Years Later jumps almost three decades ahead to a quarantined community in the UK. You don’t need a scene-by-scene recap—the outbreak’s origins, the failed return to normal, and the new film’s isolated setting are the key context.
What the Rage Virus is—and why “infected” is more accurate than “zombies”
The franchise’s outbreak begins with infected chimpanzees freed by animal-rights activists. The virus produces furious, murderous rage, turning people into a danger to anyone they encounter. The films are often described as zombie horror, but their attackers are not conventional undead: in a June 16, 2025 interview with TIME, director Danny Boyle put it plainly: “No, they’re not zombies. They’re infected.” He also explained that infected people can die. “Zombie” is familiar shorthand for the horror setup, but “infected” describes what these films actually depict.

How the story changes across the first three films
| Film | Time frame and setup | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| 28 Days Later | Jim wakes from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days after the outbreak. | The first film establishes the Rage Virus, the infected, and the immediate struggle to find safety. Sony’s official synopsis says the virus has nearly wiped out the population. |
| 28 Weeks Later | Six months after the military declares Britain safe from the virus. | The promised recovery gives way to a new crisis. That reversal is the important context; the official 20th Century Studios synopsis does not provide a detailed account of the ending. |
| 28 Years Later | Almost three decades after the virus escaped a biological-weapons laboratory. | Some survivors have built lives under strict quarantine. One island community is linked to the mainland by a single heavily defended causeway, and a journey onto the mainland brings danger and change among both infected people and survivors. Sony’s synopsis establishes this new, longer-term setting. |
28 Days Later: Jim wakes into the outbreak’s aftermath
Bicycle courier Jim comes out of a coma to find London deserted. As he encounters other survivors, he learns that the Rage Virus has devastated the population and made ordinary movement perilous. The first film’s central problem is immediate: how to survive and find safety when the infected can turn a routine journey into a deadly risk. Sony lists the film’s release date as June 27, 2003, and its runtime as 1 hour 53 minutes; it was directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. 20th Century Studios lists Blu-ray and DVD formats.
28 Weeks Later: an official all-clear does not mean the danger is over
The second film moves forward six months, to a Britain the military has declared safe. Its basic turn is that a new nightmare begins despite that announcement. If you watch it, carry forward the gap between an official recovery and a genuinely settled world; that is more useful preparation than trying to memorize plot details not established by the official synopsis. 20th Century Studios also lists Blu-ray and DVD formats.
#1 Best Overall
- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
28 Years Later: survival has become a way of life
The new film shifts the focus from escaping an immediate outbreak to living with its long aftermath. Sony describes a society under ruthlessly enforced quarantine, including a small island community whose only connection to the mainland is a defended causeway. When someone ventures across it, the mainland presents new dangers, while both infected people and survivors have changed. Those details make the setting itself part of the story: decades of separation shape what people know, how they organize, and what they risk.
Do you need to watch 28 Weeks Later first?
No. For a quick orientation, prioritize the first film’s outbreak premise and the new film’s decades-later quarantine setting. Knowing that 28 Weeks Later takes place six months after an official declaration of safety—and that the hoped-for recovery collapses into a new crisis—adds useful context, but it is not necessary to understand the basic setup of 28 Years Later.

- Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
How does 28 Years Later connect to the earlier films?
It returns to the UK and to the same Rage Virus, but its setting leaves a continuity tension. Boyle told TIME that the filmmakers chose to keep the later story in the UK rather than make the virus an international contagion, which he said had been hinted at by 28 Weeks Later. Sony’s description of 28 Years Later likewise places survivors in a quarantined UK. These facts establish a shift in narrative direction, not a complete explanation of every implication of the earlier film.

Sony identifies 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple as the fourth film in the franchise, the second installment in the newer trilogy, and a direct continuation of 28 Years Later. Its named central characters include Dr. Ian Kelson, Spike, and Jimmy Crystal. Those details locate the film in the series, but they are not required to follow the title film.
