How does Kayce’s story end in Yellowstone?
Unlike the other Duttons, Kayce does not try to preserve the ranch as a family empire. His priority is a small place where he can raise cattle and live with Monica and their son, Tate. That choice is the key to understanding both the finale and why Marshals takes him away from the Yellowstone Ranch.
In the finale, Kayce sells the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater for $1.25 per acre, a sale reported at $1.1 million in total. He intends the land to return to its Indigenous owners, through Rainwater and the Broken Rock reservation. The price and total are reported by TV Insider’s finale recap, published February 18, 2026.
The agreement does not mean Kayce’s family must leave their home. Kayce, Monica, and Tate are permitted to remain at east camp on a protected wilderness parcel. The recap says the designation restricts development and motorized vehicles. Kayce gives up the ranch’s reach and legacy, but keeps the smaller family life he wanted.

Why is Kayce pursuing a killer?
The final season’s personal crisis is John Dutton’s murder. Kayce pursues the hitman responsible; the finale recap identifies Sarah Atwood as the person who hired him and says Kayce finds the killer. That pursuit forms part of the loss and upheaval behind his next chapter, rather than changing the basic outcome of the finale: Kayce, Monica, and Tate are still together at east camp.
What changes when Marshals begins?
Marshals follows Kayce after he leaves the ranch for an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. The official Paramount+ cast guide, published March 2, 2026, describes him as a former Navy SEAL whose military experience and ranching knowledge both serve the team. It presents the series as a continuation of Kayce’s story that can also be followed independently of Yellowstone.

Actor Luke Grimes told the Associated Press that the new job gives Kayce a way to help people and become useful to his community after a profound loss. Grimes also said of the Yellowstone ending: “I love the way this ends for him. He kind of got what he always wanted, which is just a simple life.” The remarks appear in the Associated Press interview published February 25, 2026.

The new unit introduces Pete Calvin, Belle Skinner, Andrea Cruz, and Miles Kittle, according to Paramount+’s cast guide. The familiar faces include Tate, Thomas Rainwater, and Mo. These returning characters keep Kayce’s new work connected to the family and community that shaped his life in Yellowstone, even as the spinoff shifts its focus to the Marshals unit.

Yellowstone concluded in December 2024 after five seasons, with its fifth season released in two parts. Its ending leaves Kayce with a comparatively peaceful outcome: the land returns to Broken Rock, and he retains a home with Monica and Tate. Marshals begins a later chapter in which the family’s circumstances change and Kayce takes on a new role.
