Before Mikey Madison won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora in 2025, she played Max Fox in Better Things, FX’s comedy-drama about a working actor raising a family in Los Angeles. The series holds a 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, though that figure is the Tomatometer—not the audience rating.
What show did Mikey Madison star in before Anora?
Madison played Max Fox, the eldest daughter of Sam Fox, in Better Things. Pamela Adlon stars as Sam, a single mother and working actor balancing her career with raising Max, Frankie, and Duke and caring for her own mother. FX describes the series as a comedy-drama, with family life, work, parenting, and intergenerational relationships at its center. FX’s official series page provides the premise and cast information.

Better Things began in 2016, years before Madison’s Oscar win. The Academy’s official record for the 97th Academy Awards lists Madison as the 2025 winner of Actress in a Leading Role for Anora.
What does Better Things’ 98% Rotten Tomatoes score mean?
Rotten Tomatoes currently displays a 98% Tomatometer based on 166 critic reviews. The Tomatometer reflects the share of counted reviews that are positive; it does not mean that 98% of viewers liked the show, nor is it an average audience rating. The same page lists an 84% Popcornmeter from 500+ audience ratings. These are separate measures, and the live totals can change as reviews and ratings are added. Rotten Tomatoes’ Better Things page displays both figures.
#1 Best Overall
The series page also lists five seasons, with season Tomatometer scores of 95% for season one, 96% for season two, and 100% each for seasons three, four, and five. Those are the values displayed when checked in 2026, not permanent ratings. FX calls season five the show’s final chapter, so viewers can watch a completed five-season story.
Is Better Things worth watching?
The score is a useful sign of strong critical reception, but the more practical question is whether its subject and tone suit you. Better Things is a family-centered comedy-drama rather than a conventional sitcom built only around jokes. Its focus on Sam’s acting work, parenting, daughters, and mother may appeal to viewers interested in character-led stories about family and relationships across generations.
