Dennis Bryon, the Welsh drummer credited on the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” and other recordings from the group’s disco-era peak, has died at 76. Reports published November 19 and 20, 2024, confirmed his death but did not give an exact date or cause.
Who was Dennis Bryon?
Bryon was a drummer from Cardiff, Wales, who joined the Bee Gees in 1973, as the group was moving toward the dance-oriented sound that would define its Saturday Night Fever era. The Guardian describes his tenure with the band as running from 1973 to 1980; the Los Angeles Times says he played through the height of the Bee Gees’ disco renaissance. The Guardian’s obituary and the Los Angeles Times report distinguish his career from that of the group’s earlier drummer.

News reports credit Bryon’s drumming on “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever” and “How Deep Is Your Love,” among other Bee Gees recordings. The Los Angeles Times also reported that he played on nine of the group’s No. 1 records; that is the newspaper’s career figure, not a separately verified count of nine No. 1 singles.
How was Bryon connected to “Stayin’ Alive”?
“Stayin’ Alive” appeared on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, released in 1977, during Bryon’s Bee Gees tenure. The Robin Gibb official biography describes that soundtrack as featuring “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever.” It gives a historical estimate of around 40 million copies sold, as stated in the biography copyrighted 2013; that is not a current independently checked total. Blue Weaver, a musician and former bandmate, remembered Bryon in a Facebook post shared after Bryon’s family asked him to notify friends and fans. Weaver’s words, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, were: “His great drumming will always Stay Alive.”
Is this the same drummer as Colin Petersen?
No. Bryon and Colin “Smiley” Petersen were different Bee Gees drummers whose deaths were reported within days of one another, a detail that can blur their stories in brief coverage. Petersen was the band’s original drummer, joining in 1966 and leaving in 1969. Bryon joined in 1973 and played during the group’s later disco period. Petersen was 78; Bryon was 76.
