The 1978 Battlestar Galactica and the 2004 reimagining share a survival premise: after the Cylons attack, human survivors flee aboard the Galactica and seek Earth. The key difference is what the Cylons make possible. In the original, the story centers on the fleet’s adventure and journey; in the later series, Cylons can look human, turning trust, identity and the ethics of survival into ongoing conflicts. The 2004 series reimagines the earlier story rather than continuing its continuity.
How the two versions differ
| What to compare | 1978 original | 2004 reimagining |
|---|---|---|
| Starting premise | After the Cylons attack the Twelve Colonies, survivors travel with the Galactica toward Earth. | After a Cylon attack, the surviving fleet seeks Earth, but human-form Cylons may be among the people aboard. |
| Cylons | Universal’s 1978 film synopsis identifies the Cylons as the Colonies’ enemies. That synopsis is not a full account of the original television series’ portrayal. | Some Cylons can appear human, so an ally or crew member might be an enemy. This possibility makes trust a continuing source of tension. |
| Dramatic focus | Adventure, survival and the fleet’s journey. | Character-centered conflicts, including the moral, ethical, political and identity costs of survival. |
| Continuity | The original series belongs to its own continuity. | A reimagining of the premise, not a continuation of the 1978 story. |
Which one should you watch?
Choose based on the kind of science-fiction story you want. The 1978 series is the place to begin if you want the original continuity and its fleet-on-the-run adventure. The 2004 version is the stronger starting point if you want the human-Cylon identity conflict and a character-focused survival drama. You can watch either without treating it as a sequel to the other.
How to watch the 2004 series in order
Begin with the 2003 two-part miniseries. It serves as the series’ starting point; the regular-season episodes follow it. Paramount+’s franchise guide, published May 1, 2026, lists this sequence:
- Battlestar Galactica (2003 miniseries)
- Battlestar Galactica (2004), Seasons 1–4
- The Plan
- Caprica — Paramount+ recommends watching this after the four main seasons.
The guide also lists Razor among the titles not on Paramount+ at the time of publication; it does not include it in the sequence above. See Paramount+’s watch-order and availability guide for its dated service information. Availability can vary by country and change over time, so check the catalog where you watch.

Where the original pilot fits
The original television story began with a pilot that was also released in a theatrical version. Universal describes the movie in its original-series collection as the theatrical pilot version, with alternate scenes. That makes the theatrical movie and the television presentation related but not interchangeable labels when comparing editions. The Universal synopsis for the 1978 movie establishes the broad premise, not a comprehensive episode-by-episode description of the original series.

| 2004 complete-series set | Seasons 1–4 and The Plan | Blu-ray and DVD; Universal lists a 2009 release and a runtime of 69 hours 39 minutes. Universal’s complete-series catalog page. |
| Original-series Definitive Collection | The Original Series, Galactica 1980 and the theatrical Original Movie | Universal lists original-TV and widescreen formats and a runtime of 57 hours. Universal’s Definitive Collection catalog page. |
If choosing a set, check that its title and contents match the continuity you want: the Definitive Collection includes Galactica 1980 as well as the original series, while the 2004 set covers the later series and The Plan. A listing for the 1978 theatrical movie alone should not be mistaken for the complete original television series.
