Havildar Ishar Singh led them. The outpost fell and all 21 defenders were killed; they were awarded the Indian Order of Merit posthumously. Akshay Kumar portrayed Ishar Singh in the film Kesari, but the historical record presented by the sources here is firmer about the battle than about the havildar’s personal life.
What happened at Saragarhi?
Saragarhi was a signal outpost in the hills of the North-West Frontier, then part of British India and now in Pakistan. On 12 September 1897, its garrison of 21 soldiers from the 36th (Sikh) Regiment of Bengal Infantry held the position during the Tirah Force Expedition. The National Army Museum’s collection record describes the event as a 21-man last stand; its related photograph shows the ruins of Saragarhi in 1906. The outpost was eventually captured, and all 21 defenders died. They were British Indian Army soldiers, led by Havildar Ishar Singh. The available accounts establish the broad outline of the engagement, but some widely repeated numbers differ by source.
How long did the battle last, and how many attackers were there?
Published accounts disagree about the duration. The District Administration of Ferozepur says the battle lasted seven hours; the UK Ministry of Defence’s 2015 commemorative account describes it as nearly 10 hours. The sources cited here do not resolve whether the difference reflects competing accounts or different ways of defining the engagement. The same Ministry of Defence page says the outpost faced 10,000 Afghan tribesmen and that the attackers later admitted to around 180 dead, with many more wounded. Those are figures reported by that commemorative account, not independently established precise totals in the sources cited here. They should not be treated as an exact headcount or used to imply a definitive casualty ratio.
Who was Havildar Ishar Singh?
Scroll.in’s 2019 excerpt from Kiran Nirvan’s book 21 Kesaris: The Untold Story of the Battle of Saragarhi reports that Ishar Singh was born in 1858 at Jhorarh near Jagraon in Punjab, joined the Punjab Frontier Force in 1876, transferred to the 36th Sikhs in 1887, and married Jiwani Kaur in 1893. These biographical details are reported through the book excerpt; the article does not cite a contemporary personnel file that independently verifies them. Scroll.in excerpt from Kiran Nirvan’s book.

The excerpt also quotes British military historian Major General James Lunt describing Ishar Singh as “a somewhat turbulent character whose independent nature had brought him more than once into conflict with his military superiors,” then concluding: “Thus, Ishar Singh, in camp – a nuisance, in the field – magnificent.” This is Lunt’s characterization as reproduced by Scroll, not a complete or independently corroborated portrait of Singh’s personality. What does Kesari show—and what can be confirmed?
Akshay Kumar plays Ishar Singh in Kesari. The film is a dramatized portrayal of the battle and its leader. The sources cited here identify the film and its central historical subject but do not provide a screenplay or scene-by-scene comparison, so particular dialogue, incidents, and character details should not be treated as verified history on that basis alone.

The distinction matters: the core event—the date, regiment, 21-man garrison, leadership, fall of the outpost, and deaths of the defenders—is supported by the National Army Museum and the UK Ministry of Defence. The finer details of Singh’s life presented above come from a later book excerpt rather than a contemporary service record.

The UK Ministry of Defence and National Army Museum state that all 21 defenders received the Indian Order of Merit posthumously, described by those sources as the highest gallantry award available to Indian soldiers at the time. This recognition commemorated the garrison’s resistance even though Saragarhi was lost.

The Ferozepur district administration says Army authorities built the Saragarhi Memorial Gurdwara there, which Sir Charles Pevz, then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, opened in 1904. The district page also describes an annual observance on 12 September. The Sikh Museum Initiative discusses Saragarhi memorials in both Ferozepur and Amritsar; current visitor access and opening arrangements should be checked directly with the relevant site. Kiran Nirvan’s 21 Kesaris: The Untold Story of the Battle of Saragarhi is the book excerpted by Scroll.in for its account of Ishar Singh. It offers a longer treatment, while the details in the excerpt should still be understood as claims reported by that book rather than as independently confirmed personnel records.
