The 2000 Battlefield Earth movie adapts only the first half of L. Ron Hubbard’s much larger science-fiction novel, according to the film’s official overview. That makes the main difference one of scope: the movie compresses the opening stretch of a story that continues well beyond its ending.

How much of the book is in the movie?

The official Battlefield Earth overview describes the film as loosely based on the novel’s first half. Its coverage runs through the first human counterattack on the Psychlo home planet. This is the publisher’s description of the adaptation boundary, not a chapter-by-chapter comparison.

Both versions begin in AD 3000, after the Psychlos have devastated Earth. Jonnie Goodboy Tyler learns about the aliens and their weapons, then organizes human resistance. The novel’s story extends beyond the point the film covers, so the movie is not a complete screen version of the book.

Book and movie at a glance

Detail Novel 2000 film
Source and release L. Ron Hubbard’s novel, published in New York in 1982, according to the American Film Institute (AFI) catalog. Released in the United States in 2000; AFI records its Los Angeles opening as May 12, 2000.
Length The official overview lists the 21st Century Edition at 1,072 pages. Page count varies by edition. 117 minutes, according to AFI.
Adaptation coverage The larger story continues beyond the film’s endpoint. Loosely based on the first half of the novel, through the first human counterattack on the Psychlo home planet, according to the official overview.
Principal characters Jonnie Goodboy Tyler and Terl are central to the story described in the official overview. AFI credits Barry Pepper as Jonnie, John Travolta as Terl, and Forest Whitaker as Ker.

What changes when a long novel becomes a 117-minute film?

The format sets a clear limit: a 117-minute film has less room than a novel of more than a thousand pages. The official overview’s first-half description gives the clearest measure of that compression. It does not establish which individual scenes, subplots, or character details were changed or removed, so claims about specific differences need to be checked against both works.

The film also gives its characters a distinct screen cast: Roger Christian directed it, with Travolta as Terl, Pepper as Jonnie, and Whitaker as Ker. AFI classifies the movie as adventure and science fiction, with an action subgenre, and rates it PG-13. Those credits and categories identify the film’s presentation; they do not by themselves show how its characterizations compare with the novel.

How long is the novel, exactly?

The official overview lists 393,466 words and 1,072 pages for the 21st Century Edition. The official awards page gives a different word count: 428,750. Neither page explains the discrepancy, so there is no single established word count to quote without specifying an edition and counting method. The page figure is also edition-dependent.

Is the book better than the movie?

There is no objective winner: readers who want the fuller story may prefer the novel, while viewers who want a shorter screen adaptation may prefer the film. The movie’s limited coverage is a meaningful consideration if you expect it to tell the whole novel’s story.

Reception figures offer context, not a verdict for an individual reader. When accessed in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 3% Tomatometer score from 151 critic reviews and a 13% Popcornmeter score from more than 50,000 audience ratings. The critic and audience figures represent different groups, and the site’s totals can change.
