Her defining break with the Jedi came when she bombed the Jedi Temple and framed her friend Ahsoka Tano, convinced the Order had become complicit in the Clone Wars. The canon sources establish the sequence, but not exact in-universe dates or how long Barriss was imprisoned or served as an Inquisitor.
Who was Barriss Offee before the Clone Wars?
Barriss is a Mirialan Jedi Padawan trained by Luminara Unduli. She appears among the Jedi delegation in Attack of the Clones and fights at Geonosis with a blue lightsaber. StarWars.com’s Databank entry describes her distress after the battle, an early sign of the conflict between her contemplative nature and the violence surrounding her.
During the Clone Wars, Barriss preferred study to frontline combat, but the Jedi sent her on wartime missions. She often served alongside Ahsoka, and the two became friends.
What did Barriss do during the Clone Wars?
The Geonosis droid factory
In a mission on Geonosis, Barriss and Ahsoka infiltrated a droid factory. Barriss memorized the junctions in the underground catacombs, helping them navigate the complex and destroy the factory. The episode shows her knowledge and composure as practical strengths, even in combat.

The brain-worm infection
While carrying medical supplies to Dantooine, Barriss and Ahsoka encountered parasitic brain worms aboard their shuttle. Barriss became infected and attacked Ahsoka. Ahsoka used extreme cold to weaken the worms, and Barriss recovered. This was an infection, not a deliberate betrayal.
StarWars.com’s Clone Wars feature recounts these Republic-era stories alongside Barriss’s later turn against the Order.
Rank #2
- The Mirialan Padawan to Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee preferred learning ancient Jedi texts in the Temple to war.
Why did Barriss turn against the Jedi?
Barriss came to believe that the Jedi had lost their way by becoming part of the Republic’s war effort. She acted on that conviction by orchestrating the bombing of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, then framing Ahsoka for the attack. Barriss initially helped her friend while hiding her own involvement.
Anakin Skywalker uncovered the truth and confronted Barriss in a duel. At a military tribunal led by Governor Tarkin, Barriss admitted her guilt but continued to criticize the Jedi and the Republic. The bombing was Barriss’s crime; Ahsoka was framed and was not its architect. The Databank says Barriss was imprisoned for life.

Voice actor Meredith Salenger described Barriss’s moral center in an official StarWars.com interview: “the most important thing about Barriss is that she answers to her own moral compass.” That helps explain her stated motive, but it does not excuse the bombing or the harm she caused Ahsoka.
What happened to Barriss after Order 66?
Barriss survived her imprisonment into the Imperial era. In Tales of the Empire, the Fourth Sister approaches her in her cell and offers a choice: join the Inquisitorius or remain imprisoned. Barriss accepts recruitment under that pressure. The Databank sums up the transition: “With the dawn of the Empire, Barriss is freed for a new purpose: to serve the Inquisitorius.”

That makes Barriss an Inquisitor in the Imperial era, but the official material cited here does not establish a specific Inquisitor designation or how long she serves. Salenger’s interview says the final three episodes of Barriss’s story pick up soon after her Clone Wars Season 5 finale arc. The sequence is clear; an exact BBY or ABY date is not.
