By nominal worldwide theatrical gross, The Dark Knight Rises ranks first among Batman-led theatrical features in this list, followed by The Dark Knight. The ranking uses worldwide totals reported by The Numbers and includes theatrical animated features, while excluding ensemble films and movies led by other characters.
How this Batman box-office ranking is defined
“Batman movies” can mean either films led by Batman or the much broader franchise. This list ranks theatrical feature films in which Batman is the central lead, including animated features that received theatrical releases. It excludes films centered on other characters and ensemble titles in which Batman is one of several leads, such as Joker, Catwoman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Figures are nominal worldwide theatrical grosses in U.S. dollars, not inflation-adjusted totals. The ranking uses The Numbers’ Batman franchise box-office table, consulted October 8, 2026. That table is a broad franchise inventory, so only entries that meet the scope above appear here. Box-office databases can report different totals and handle rereleases differently; the figures below are The Numbers’ reported totals, not a reconciliation of multiple databases.

Totals are database-reported worldwide theatrical grosses from The Numbers’ Batman Franchise Box Office History, consulted October 8, 2026. The table is ordered by those reported totals; it does not adjust for inflation or distinguish each film’s original run from any rerelease accounting included in the database.

Why some published totals differ
Box-office totals are not always identical across databases. For example, Box Office Mojo lists The Batman’s original 2022 release at $772,245,583 worldwide, with separate amounts for a 2024 UK rerelease ($73,732) and a 2025 domestic rerelease ($455,963); its all-releases total is $772,775,278. The Numbers reports $772,512,903 for the film. These are different database totals and release groupings, so this ranking keeps The Numbers’ figure rather than blending sources. Box Office Mojo’s The Batman title page gives its release-group and regional breakdown.
Scope also changes what appears in a Batman franchise list. The Numbers’ franchise inventory includes films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Catwoman, but this ranking omits them because Batman is not the sole central lead. Its inclusion of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman: The Killing Joke reflects theatrical grosses of $5,697,562 and $4,361,038 respectively; both fall below the nine films ranked above. Franchise membership alone does not make a film a Batman-led title under this list’s definition.

What the ranking does—and does not—show
- Worldwide, not domestic: the figures combine reported theatrical receipts across markets. They should not be compared as if they were U.S.-only grosses.
- Nominal dollars: older releases are not adjusted for ticket-price inflation, so rank is not a measure of attendance or relative popularity across eras.
- Database totals, not audited receipts: totals can vary by source and may change as databases revise records or account for rereleases.
- A defined selection, not every Batman-related film: animated theatrical features count, while other-character and ensemble films do not.
