India’s Most Fearless 2: More Military Stories of Unimaginable Courage and Sacrifice, by journalists Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, offers an account of how the Indian Air Force planned its February 26, 2019 strike near Balakot, Pakistan. The excerpt describes target selection and mission preparations; it is the authors’ narrative, not an independent assessment of the strike’s damage or casualties.

What the book excerpt covers

The excerpt appears under the heading “An Untold Account from ‘India’s Most Fearless 2’.” Scroll says it reproduced the passage with permission from Ebury Books. Read the excerpt at Scroll, or see the publisher’s excerpt.

Its focus is the planning behind the February 26, 2019 operation. According to Scroll’s account of the book, the Indian Air Force (IAF) worked with intelligence agencies in Delhi from February 16 to 20, then presented target tables to the government on February 21. The narrative describes seven target options, with the first being a Jaish-e-Mohammed training compound at Jabba Top, near Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The authors say Balakot was chosen in part because it was secluded and was assessed to pose a lower risk of non-terrorist casualties than the alternatives. That explanation is part of the excerpt’s account of the decision; it should not be read as independently verified operational documentation.

How the excerpt describes the mission

The book’s narrative recounts pilot briefings on February 24 and describes the planning and staging of the mission. The publisher’s excerpt places a Mirage 2000 pilot over Pakistan-occupied Kashmir shortly after 3:30 a.m. on February 26. These details show what the authors report about the operation’s preparations and timeline, rather than independently confirming every operational detail.

Why the strike took place

The strike followed the February 14, 2019 Pulwama attack. India Today’s March 15, 2019 report says 40 security personnel were killed in that attack. Read India Today’s report.

What this account does—and does not—establish

An account of target selection and mission preparation is not, by itself, an assessment of what happened at the target. The sources cited here do not establish an independent evaluation of damage or casualties at Balakot. Claims about those effects therefore need attribution to the source making them; the excerpt’s planning narrative alone cannot prove them.

The excerpt is from India’s Most Fearless 2: More Military Stories of Unimaginable Courage and Sacrifice by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. For another book on the subject, Bloomsbury describes Nitin A. Gokhale’s Securing India the Modi Way: Balakot, Anti Satellite Missile Test and More as covering decisions and planning around Balakot, and lists its publication date as September 27, 2019. That publisher description identifies the book’s stated scope; it is not independent corroboration of its claims. See Bloomsbury’s book page.
