Bad Bunny reposted a video celebrating Puerto Rico on October 29, 2024, with the caption “Garbage,” two days after a comedian at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally called the island a “floating island of garbage.” The clip was not new: it had introduced Bad Bunny’s December 2021 concerts in San Juan. His separate support for Kamala Harris was reported independently of the repost.
Why did Bad Bunny post “Garbage”?
At Trump’s October 27, 2024, rally at Madison Square Garden, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe disparaged Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” prompting widespread criticism. The Trump campaign spokesperson, Danielle Alvarez, said, “this joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” The Associated Press reported the remark and the campaign’s response.

On October 29, Bad Bunny reposted a Puerto Rico tribute video with the caption “Garbage (basura),” as Univision reported. The timing and reuse of Hinchcliffe’s insult make the caption read as a pointed response; that interpretation is supported by contemporaneous coverage, not by a direct explanation from Bad Bunny. The sources reviewed do not establish a statement from him explaining his intent in his own words.
What was in the Puerto Rico video?
The clip was originally made as the introduction to Bad Bunny’s P Fkn R concerts at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan in December 2021—not a new video created in response to the rally. Metro Puerto Rico reported its original concert context; Univision described it as a little over eight minutes long.

Its imagery and narration celebrate the island’s landscapes, history, cultural and sporting figures, and everyday people. Journalist Hermes Ayala wrote the video, and actor Benicio del Toro narrated it, according to Metro Puerto Rico. The closing passage, as reported by Univision, says:
“Nosotros estamos luchando desde el día uno de nuestra existencia, somos la definición de corazón y resistencia. Aquí seguimos, aquí estamos, y para aquellos que olvidan quienes somos… tranquilo, con orgullo se lo recordamos”.
In English, the message says Puerto Ricans have struggled since their existence began, are defined by heart and resistance, and remain present and proud. The video’s final words make its emphasis on resilience and pride explicit.
Did Bad Bunny endorse Kamala Harris?
Yes. The Harris support was a separate action from the later repost of the Puerto Rico tribute. The Associated Press reported that Bad Bunny shared a video featuring Harris’s comments about Puerto Rico, and that a representative for the artist confirmed his support for Harris. AP’s account of the rally and the related reactions distinguishes that support from his October 29 post.

Why did the post resonate beyond the immediate exchange?
The insult concerned Puerto Rico and its people, while the repost placed the word “Garbage” beside a video celebrating the island and its residents. That contrast explains why coverage treated the caption as a response rather than as a description of the video. The tribute’s closing lines answer the insult with an assertion of endurance and pride.
Univision reported that an estimate based on census data put the number of Puerto Ricans in the United States at about 5.8 million, or 9% of the U.S. Hispanic population. Because the underlying Pew Research Center publication was not available in the reporting reviewed, that figure is best understood as an estimate attributed to Pew and reported by Univision, not as an independently verified count.
