DVDs can still be worth buying for a film you expect to revisit, a title that is hard to access elsewhere, or a collection you value. Streaming and rental are usually more convenient for browsing and one-off viewing. The best choice depends on the exact title, local price, access to a working player, and how much you value owning a physical copy.
When buying a DVD makes sense
You expect to watch the title again
If you already know a documentary or film is one you will revisit, compare the disc’s current purchase price with the cost of renting it each time or maintaining a subscription you would otherwise pay for. The comparison only works when you use the prices and options available to you; there is no universal break-even point.
You want a particular physical edition
A DVD can be a practical choice when a specific title is available on disc but not through a service you use. Availability depends on the title and territory. The BFI, for example, offers some archive films for purchase on DVD or Blu-ray, while other films are available through its streaming and rental services: BFI DVD and Blu-ray and BFI Player.
You value the object as part of a collection
A disc can be displayed, lent, and handled as a physical object. Ted Striphas, chair of the Department of Media Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, told The Washington Post in December 2025: “Being able to physically display media artifacts tells people something about who you are and your identity,” he said. “And that just does not translate into the world of streaming.” That is a personal and cultural benefit, not a guarantee that every disc is a better-value purchase.

When streaming or rental is the better fit
You want convenience and variety
A subscription or rental service can give you access to a changing catalog without buying each title separately. BFI Player illustrates the distinction: it offers subscription viewing, pay-as-you-go rentals, and streaming on supported devices. Its catalog, device support, and availability depend on the service and territory.
You watch a title only once
For casual viewing, renting or watching through a service you already pay for may avoid both the cost of a disc and the need to store it. Check whether the exact title is included or requires a separate rental; a service’s catalog can change.

You lack a player or space
A DVD collection takes storage space and requires compatible playback equipment. A 2026 article in the Journal of the American Library Association described a narrowing pool of companies producing DVD and Blu-ray players and retailers leaving the standalone player market. That report is context, not a live check of local stock. If you already have a working player, this concern matters less than it does for someone starting from scratch.
What the market figures say—and what they do not
Recent figures show that DVDs remain on sale but have become a small part of home video in the UK and Germany. They describe those markets, not worldwide availability or an individual buyer’s value calculation.

| Market and year | Reported figures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom, 2024 | DVD sales were £75 million, down 19% year on year; DVDs accounted for 1% of the video market. Subscription streaming revenue was £4.5 billion, up 8% on 2023 and representing 89% of video revenues. Blu-ray and 4K UHD sales together reached £82 million, up 5% on 2023. The source reports that 99% of video transactions were digital. | Film Distributors’ Association, 2025 |
| Germany, 2025 | Physical home-video spending was €218 million. DVD spending fell below Blu-ray spending for the first time; SVoD spending exceeded €3 billion and remained the largest home-video segment. The FFA study also found that 42% of people aged 10 and older had spent money in the home-video market in the preceding 12 months. Its 2025 sample covered all German residents aged 10 or older, and historical figures were retrospectively adjusted. | Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), 2026 |
The figures document a shift toward digital access, but market share alone does not tell you whether a particular DVD is worth buying. A Washington Post article in December 2025 gave examples of buyers finding DVDs for $3–$5 less than a digital purchase or rental. That is an example from the article, not a general price rule or a current quote.

- Check availability. Look for the exact title on DVD, in the services you already use, and as a rental. Catalogs and physical editions vary by title and territory.
- Compare actual costs. Set the disc’s current price against the rental price and any subscription cost you would incur specifically to watch it. Don’t count a subscription you already keep for other reasons as a new cost for this film.
- Estimate repeat viewing. Consider whether you are likely to watch it again, lend it, or use it with other people. Repeated use can make a purchase more appealing, but it does not guarantee savings.
- Check playback and storage. Confirm that you have a working compatible player and a place to keep the disc. If you do not, include the practical effort and expense of getting playback equipment in your decision.
- Include the value of collecting. If you enjoy owning and displaying physical media, that may justify a disc even when streaming or rental is easier. If the object itself does not matter to you, prioritize access and convenience.
DVD versus streaming: the trade-offs
| Consideration | DVD | Streaming or rental |
|---|---|---|
| Access to a specific title | Depends on whether a suitable edition is sold and remains playable. | Depends on the service’s current catalog or rental availability. |
| Repeat viewing | Can suit a title you expect to revisit; the disc must be kept in usable condition and played on compatible equipment. | Convenient when included in a service you already use; repeat access may depend on the title staying in the catalog or on paying for further rentals. |
| Convenience | Requires handling and storing a disc, plus a player. | Offers access through supported devices, subject to the service and its terms. |
| Collection value | Provides a physical item to keep and display. | Provides access without adding a physical object. |
| Price and picture quality | Depends on the title, edition, local price, and viewing setup; no matched current price or quality test establishes a universal advantage. | Depends on the service, rental terms, and available version; no matched current price or quality test establishes a universal advantage. |
Are DVDs likely to disappear?
The UK and German figures show decline, not that DVDs have vanished. Editions continue to be sold, and some libraries and archives still use discs in their collections. Colin Higgins’s library-focused article discusses their continuing service role alongside declining sales and collection-management challenges. That institutional case does not establish that every household needs a disc collection. For an individual buyer, the practical question is whether the title is available in the format, whether it can be played, and whether owning it suits their habits.
