The available interviews document lasting sorrow and family conversations about Carter’s death, but they do not establish that Cooper has named specific unanswered questions. “Still has questions” is therefore a framing of the topic, not a verified quotation or reported claim from Cooper.
What Cooper has said about Carter’s death
Carter Cooper died by suicide when Anderson was 21; Carter was 23. Cooper has discussed the loss in interviews over the years, including a 2019 CBS News report about grief and how it informs his journalism.
Cooper has said his experience makes him especially attentive to the privacy of families whose loved ones have died. He described the assumption that grief eventually disappears as misleading: “I think we like to think it goes away and you get over it and you move on, you go back to work and everything’s fine,” he told CBS. “But it’s good to have other people out there who know that’s not how it happens and who are comfortable communicating with you in this new language, this language of loss.”
He also recalled his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, describing the two of them as alone in a lifeboat after Carter died. Over time, he said, other people with similar experiences joined them. Cooper offered this as a personal way to describe connection after loss, not as a universal timetable or prescription for grieving.

How the family discussed Carter years later
In a 2011 ABC News interview, Cooper asked Vanderbilt whether she still thought about the day Carter died. Her willingness to discuss the question publicly, years after the death, showed that the loss remained part of their family conversations.
Cooper also discussed Carter and his family history in a 2021 Washington Post interview transcript. These interviews document reflection and grief; they do not supply a specific list of questions Cooper says he still needs answered.

What the headline does—and does not—establish
The wording “still has questions” should not be read as a direct quotation or a confirmed account of a particular recent interview. The documented material supports a narrower point: Cooper has spoken about the lasting effects of his brother’s death, about protecting bereaved families’ privacy, and about the value of people who can communicate with one another through what he calls a “language of loss.” It does not identify an unresolved question, explain why Carter died, or establish a definitive cause.
A 2006 CNN Larry King Live transcript also records Cooper discussing Carter and his book Dispatches From the Edge. CNN labels it a rush transcript, so its wording should be treated with that qualification.

Cooper’s 60 Minutes role
In a report dated February 17, 2026, the Associated Press said Cooper was leaving 60 Minutes to spend more time with his family and expected to finish the season. That report is about his work schedule, not a new disclosure about Carter’s death; it should not be mistaken for the interview implied by the headline.
