Naughty Wives is the US title for the 1973 British sex comedy Secrets of a Door-to-Door Salesman. It follows vacuum cleaner salesman David Clyde as he encounters sexual advances from customers and women at his London lodging. The film runs about 80 minutes; some US listings date it to 1974.
What is Naughty Wives about?
David Clyde, a young man from the countryside, moves into a London boarding-house setting and takes a job selling vacuum cleaners door to door. The comedy comes from his efforts to manage the sexual attention he receives from female customers and women around his lodging. It is an adult-oriented British sex comedy, and its premise reflects the period in which it was made.
Is it the same film as Secrets of a Door-to-Door Salesman?
Yes. Naughty Wives is the US release title for the film also known as Secrets of a Door-to-Door Salesman. The different year labels found in listings do not necessarily indicate two separate films: the film is associated with 1973, while Rotten Tomatoes labels it a 1974 US release. IMDb lists its runtime as 80 minutes and its rating as R. IMDb’s record and Rotten Tomatoes’ listing use these catalog details.
Who directed and starred in the film?
Wolf Rilla is identified as the film’s principal director in reference and catalog records. Credit listings differ in how they describe Jonathan Demme’s involvement: IMDb includes Demme alongside Rilla as a director, while the reference record notes Demme’s work on the opening sequence. Joseph McGrath and Denis Norden are credited as writers in catalog records, and David Grant as producer.

Brendan Price plays David Clyde. The credited cast also includes Sue Longhurst, Felicity Devonshire, Victoria Burgoyne and Graham Stark. Music is credited to John Shakespeare and Derek Warne, with Mark McDonald credited for cinematography. FilmAffinity’s catalog entry provides production and credit information.
Why do some listings say 1974?
The 1973 date refers to the film’s production and initial-release context. Some US-facing services use 1974, including Rotten Tomatoes, which labels it a 1974 US release. The available records therefore point to differing release-date conventions rather than evidence of a distinct movie. The runtime is listed as about 80 minutes.

The title is not unique. Australia’s classification authority separately records a 1992 magazine titled Naughty Wives (Velvet Spectacular); that publication is not the 1973 film. The Australian classification record identifies the magazine.
