Contemporary reporting attributed the closure to the building owner not renewing the bar’s lease.
When did Bar Orient close?
The venue’s final event was advertised for Wednesday 31 December 2025, from 6 pm until 2 am on Thursday 1 January 2026 AWST. Humanitix listed it as “Bar Orient’s Last Night NYE!” at 39 High Street. The Fremantle Herald reported on 16 January 2026 that the bar had recently closed after the farewell.
What happened at the final-night celebration?
The event listing advertised Jet Lag playing in the front bar and karaoke in the Chesterfield Lounge. It listed tickets at $10, including pizza; that is the advertised offer, not independent confirmation of what attendees received.
Why did Bar Orient close?
PerthNow reported on 9 September 2025 that the bar would close at year’s end under the building owner’s direction. The Fremantle Herald later reported that the lease was not renewed. The available reporting does not include a direct statement from building owner Tattarang explaining its rationale, so no further reason for the decision is established here. Tony Taylor, identified in the closure coverage as the bar’s owner and licensee, told PerthNow, “It’s a sad day.”

How old is the Orient Hotel building?
The bar occupied the Orient Hotel, a three-storey commercial building at 39 High Street constructed in 1902–03, according to the State Heritage Office record. PerthNow reported that the venue opened as a bar in 1903. The familiar “122-year-old” description refers to the historic premises and venue history around the time closure was announced; it does not establish uninterrupted operation as a bar for 122 years.
The building is heritage-listed. The Heritage Council record recognizes its historical, streetscape and social value, including its place as a long-standing meeting point and its association with Fremantle’s development. A 1997 Western Australian Government statement described the Orient as “an essential part of Fremantle’s historic West End” and connected it with the area’s early community life.
