There is no verified backstage explanation in the available reporting for WWE’s decision to end Bianca Belair’s historic Raw Women’s Championship reign. What is confirmed is that Asuka defeated Belair at Night of Champions on May 27, 2023, ending a reign WWE lists as 419 days. Claims about WWE’s internal motive should be treated as rumor unless tied to an attributable report.
What happened to Bianca Belair’s title reign?
Asuka defeated Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship at Night of Champions on May 27, 2023. WWE’s official event results confirm the title change.
WWE’s current profile puts Belair’s reign at 419 days. She began it by defeating Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 38, according to WWE’s match report. WWE’s May 6, 2023 Backlash recap said Belair had retained against IYO SKY and described her then as the longest-reigning women’s champion of the modern era.
Are there verified backstage rumors about why WWE made the change?
No named-person explanation of WWE’s internal booking rationale is established by the sources cited here. That means there is no substantiated backstage reason to report as fact—not that any particular fan theory is correct.

Belair’s loss, the timing of the match, and the finish can be described from the show and match coverage, but they do not establish why WWE chose that moment to change the title. Any claim about the company’s private reasoning needs an attributable report, not an inference from the on-screen story.
What the match coverage confirms
Fightful’s contemporary match report described Asuka using mist on her fingers to blind Belair, then landing kicks and pinning her. That is coverage of the finish; it does not supply evidence of backstage intent.
