The viral photos of Avril Lavigne standing at a distance from fans were taken at a 2014 tour meet-and-greet in São Paulo, Brazil. Contemporary reports said attendees had been told not to touch or hug her unless she initiated contact. The images helped spark jokes and memes, but they cannot show what was said at the event or explain Lavigne’s state of mind.
Where the photos came from
The pictures circulated in early May 2014 and were reported as showing Lavigne posing with fans during her Brazil tour stop in São Paulo. In the still images, she often appears to leave space between herself and the people beside her. That visible gap became the meme’s hook: Brazilian coverage described jokes and edited montages that exaggerated the distance, including images that placed fans far away or in other locations. Capricho’s May 3, 2014 report covered the photos and their online circulation; its page was later updated in 2024.
What reports said about contact
Several outlets reported that fans were told not to initiate physical contact. Capricho and VEJA, reporting May 4, 2014, described instructions against touching or hugging; VEJA also mentioned kissing. E! reported on May 5 that security told attendees they could not touch or hug Lavigne unless she initiated contact. These are contemporary media accounts, not a preserved contract or proof of a single written policy applying to every attendee.
What the meet-and-greet reportedly cost
Brazilian coverage put the price at about R$800. VEJA reported that the amount did not include a concert ticket. English-language outlets rendered the reported price differently: E! described it as about US$400, while The Guardian reported £215. These are historical figures from different outlets and currencies, not current prices or a single independently verified exchange-rate calculation.

What the images can—and cannot—tell us
A photograph records a pose at one instant. It cannot establish what happened before or after the shutter, whether a consent conversation took place, or why Lavigne and each fan stood as they did. In a contemporary commentary, Mic argued that the pictures were being used to mock a woman for not allowing strangers physical contact, while noting that viewers could not know the full circumstances from the images. The apparent awkwardness is an interpretation of the photographs, not evidence of Lavigne’s feelings or motives.
There are two separate expectations worth distinguishing. Attendees who paid for a meet-and-greet might reasonably have hoped for a warm, personal exchange. But paying for access does not itself establish a right to touch a performer, and the photos alone do not settle whether the experience matched what attendees had been promised. The Guardian used the incident to criticize the broader paid VIP package market; that was commentary on the industry, not proof of Lavigne’s intentions or the terms of this particular event.

Lavigne’s later response was about comparisons
In August 2015—more than a year after the Brazil photos—Lavigne responded to online comparisons between her fan photos and Taylor Swift’s. TIME reported that a post juxtaposed meet-and-greet images of several celebrities and that Lavigne replied with a collage of herself with fans. Glamour UK reproduced her response: “Comparison is judging and judging a person does not define who they are it defines who you are. We all Love our fans.” This was a response to comparisons, not a documented explanation of the Brazil event’s contact instructions.
